I have noticed that some of the providers require presreening before they will even talk about setting up an appointment.  Does anyone out there know of/recommend independent services that can do this?  I have heard that some independent services will do a prescreening of hobbyists and which will serve as a referor if background screening is required by a provider.  Any advice?

Try Room Service 2000. They are not too expensive and can make life easier securing a date with a provider. Hey if it makes the girls more at ease I am all for it. At times when it is last minute and they may not have time to do a check it can be the difference between a hot night or a night alone.
