the drivel that everyone predicted would come about after Y2K. Insane.

Although, a Mormon friend of mine told me that they are always prepared for emergencies, as if it's a part of their religious views. Thou shalt not enjoy caffeine, premarital sex, nicotene or liquor and be prepared for the big one. lol.

Either way, I always thought it was a good idea to have an earthquake preparedness kit or some such so I have a first aid kit, lots of bottles of water, dry goods, canned stuff with a long shelf life, etc... so I'm not worried about an emergency like Hurricane Katrina (also because I'm in Los Angeles, where we don't get hurricanes.)

If the price of oil stays above $60/barrel for a relatively small number of years oil shale will come online. The higher the oil prices the faster this will happen (though it is NOT linear).

Once oil shale is commercially exploitable Canada and the US will have many times the proven oil reserves of the middle east and other parts of the world.

Oil shale is not without its issues in terms of waste and other impacts, but over time technology will deal with that.

This means that at that per barrel price the world has more than enough oil for several hundred years.  And North America will again be a major EXPORTER of crude oil.

Katie,

Ever since Katrina and other large scale natural disasters the Federal Govt. has been telling people they need to be prepared to take care of their own food and water needs for at least three days, probably five would be better.  Here is a link as to what to have http://www.ready.gov/america/getakit/

Also I am pretty sure those nice Mormans will not share with you if disaster strikes ;-).
