It is very easy for things to go astray and misunderstandings to ensue, on both sides.

One of the great things about the hobby is the lack of strings, and bartering will only start to attach some strings to your romantic encounters.

Plus, bartering is often a way around paying taxes and as a tax payer, I don't particularly like anything that allows others to avoid shouldering their share of the burden.

OK, OK I feel kinda of bad asking but my need for hobbying is increasing beyond my budget so here is the question.  At what point and time can I discuss bartering with a provider that you connect with on several levels (pun intended...lol) and want to see her more frequently or is bad edict or just plain taboo.   I am a profession engineer skilled many crafts (i.e. licenced general contractor, in electrical, plumbing, masonry, carpentry, interior and exterior remodelling work, etc)  I also use to race cars so I'm a skilled mechanic and can do just about any type of automotive repair.  Finally because of my vocation I'm very knowledgeable about computers and computer software and many other things like setting up security systems, entertainment system, or web site work.  I can provide proof of work and references.  

I know this would mainly apply to independent providers but I'm ok with that since I'm only seeing independent at the current time.  Bartering has been used throughout history to the present day which is why I'm curious about it's use in hobbying.....  How do you ladies feel about it?

As a matter of fact, a lady was advertising for a drywall guy on one of the local boards recently.  I suggest you post something on the In Search Of Board.  It couldn't hurt.  Post what you are qualified to do and offer it in exchange for hobbying.  Good Luck!

and once for a kick-ass flat-screen TV. So I guess I'm open to it. HOWEVER, both of those instances were with well-known clients, after a year or so of seeing them.

I'm not sure how well I'd respond to a first-timer trying to barter right away.

why don't you just get a second job to finance your hobby needs??

It would have to be services I really need. As a contractor you have value, but I don't need any such work done. Even on the computer side, I already paid for tech support upfront.

So it's cool, but unless you sell diamonds or condos, I might not want anything you can barter? LOL

Beyond that, most ladies seem to have the ability to bat their eyes for stuff.  I've known several that have been gifted computer equipment, vehicles, apartments, website design, auto repair...and on and on.  I wouldn't be so bold as to say that there wasn't some sort of payback, but it's pretty tough to get a lady something that truly impresses her on a monetary level.  Kindness may be another matter.

When one feels they got the short end, the deal falls apart.   Small deals might fly but anything on going is just too complicated.

Maybe dinner, drinks and a show, or something first before the regular session would be nice.  But I think under most circumstances you'd also pay for the time that they spent eating the dinner you bought.
