I mean, it is funny and true, except at the end. It's not criminal, however, it's not sad. Well... maybe for some, but some of like the NSA, no drama aspect... and I don't know about you, but I'm far from sad about this lifestyle.

gay people, who one could have argued about 20-30 years ago suffered the same indignities as we have now, were able to overcome this and achieve unimaginable things of late, including the right of legal marriage.

They have fought a similar battle for at least as long and are still fighting for their right to be left the fuck alone by the state. I think pot smokers are a better analogy than gays, since pot smoking is a choice, while no one chooses their sexual orientation. Pot smokers also don't hurt anyone else, and not even themselves, just like us. Pot smokers have been put in jail, just like us. People who deal in pot have been put in prison and have served some VERY long terms, just like anyone charged with "trafficking" such as agency owners who have a 100% willing staff.

Both pot and sex are monetarily lucrative.

transcends most every other consensual alternative culture I know of.  I see it present in the swing community, gang bang community, BDSM community, poly community, queer community,bisexual/lesbian community, porn community, stripper community and burning man community.  I am not  exactly sure why.  I am out in every aspect of my life except this one.

Unfortunately... the antiquated puritan views of this country have put a stigma on anything sexual. An open minded and intelligent view would show this should be an accepted practice. There's no deception, no wasted effort, and both parties leave content in the end. However, in its current state...just to admit that you partake in this lifestyle,  automatically leads most to equate you with rapists, child molesters, and all other deviants.  
That's why most hide in the shadows....not because we're ashamed of ourselves....but because of the shame that would unjustly be thrown upon us if we stood up to be heard. This country is full of people so narrow minded and simply too unintelligent to understand that their thought process is not shared by all, nor is it necessarily right.

Everyone pays for sex. Its just a matter of how much and the currency used. If you add it all up a typical GF/BF or wife/Husband can cost a lot more over the long run than Play For Pay hookups. And that is just the monetary costs, to say nothing of the psychological and emotional costs which can also translate in to monetary costs (i. e. lawyers (divorce, child custody), therapy sessions, lost days from work . . . etc.) Beyond that, The Second Law of Thermodynamics assures that there is no such thing as a free lunch. We all pay one way or another. It's nature's way.  Its just that providers, metaphorically speaking, go through the front door while providing their services while most everyone else goes through the back. I know, really cynical but reality cannot be denied. Don't get me wrong, love is real and can be beautiful but its still gonna cost you. Its just you happily pay. As someone told me as a young man: "you may not get everything you pay for, but you certainly will pay for everything you get."
