I’ve gifted VIP days so I know it can be done, or at least it could be done as of the last time I did it.

I don’t know of any sure way to tell if a member has full VIP other than members with an alias, like me, have full VIP. One indirect way to tell with members who aren’t providers with a profile (and thus have limited VIP) is reply to them in a thread “PM sent”, send them a PM, and see if they reply to the PM or reply in the thread with something like “I don’t have VIP so I can’t respond to PMs”.

As far as I know, there is nothing that appears on a provider profile that tells us what her membership status is, but I believe Providers that have claimed their profile get PM access without paying for VIP. Likewise, I don't think there is any notation that indicates a customer's status either. When it comes to the mongers here, I usually find out through unanswered PM's because for customers, PM is only available with a VIP membership. They will still see items in their inbox, but they can't open them. I've always had VIP since day one on TER, so there may be things I don't know about basic membership, so feel free to correct me if I got anything wrong.

I used to transfer VIP days from my account to both providers...

and hobbyists. It ranged anywhere from 90 days to one year. Last June I apparently transferred too many days to too many people in too short a time period so I was told that the transfer of VIP days was being suspended for the time being.

That type of transfer of VIP days may only apply to me because I was transferring VIP days that I had accrued from doing Problem Reports. I suppose that if someone BUYS VIP days they could still transfer those days to someone else. That way TER is still making money from the transfer.
