Saw the uproar here recently about the use of CPA's favorite word, hooker. So I decided to try and find the origin of it. Like most folks I thought it had come from the Civil War as the local ladies would frequent the camp of General Joseph Hooker. Seems he was a fellow hobbyist and turned a blind eye torwards it and would partake in the fun himself. So based in that I never thought it to be that offensive a word, I choose not to use it here because the ladies here are companions not run of the mill street hookers. Can't wait for the backlash from that comment. As I dug a little deeper I found that that story is false, there have been records of that word referring to providers dating back to the 1500's the term hooker was originally coined to describe a thief and later morphed into describing the way a lady would "hook" her clients. Hell I've had a few reel me in hook line and sinker but I'm not complaining!! Lol!  
The word also appears in John Bartletts "Encylopedia of Americanisms" published in 1859.
