Help with a book

I read a book review a couple of months ago, and I'd like to get it but I don't remember either the author or the title.  I do however remember the description of the plot rather vividly, for reasons that will become obvious.

The story is about a young woman working as a prostitute in Victorian era London, and it follows her involvement with a particular client who first chooses her from a review he reads in a brochure that was apparently available at the time, (I had no idea this was so traditional!) The review says she's a good listener and has few limitations.  He becomes a regular and eventually "buys" her from the madam, (who is also her mother,) to become his permanent and exclusive mistress.

As I said, I don't have a clue about the title or author, (other than it was a man and I believe he was British,) so I don't know where to start looking.  Has anyone read or heard of it?  I'm especially interested in how a male author would describe the experience from the female's point of view.

Thanks in advance!

Anya,  I don't know what book it is, but if you remember what publication you read the review in, perhaps you can search their website for archived articles.  That sometimes works.  In the meantime, I'll keep my eyes open for it.

Happy New Year to you too!
