I recently had a disheartening experience that underscores the oftimes frustrating dynamics of the verification process, particularly as it relates to the self-employed.  Let me say that this is not a rant about the lady in question’s requirements; they were perfectly reasonable.  I simply could not meet them.

The reason I could not meet the lady’s screening criteria is that I choose to work alone. I’ve had enough of corporate life and no longer want the burdens that come with having a staff of people whose financial well-being I’m responsible for.  I don’t want that kind of pressure again.  

But that means I don’t have a main telephone number staffed by a receptionist or an ACD system that a lady whom I want to meet may call to verify I’m who I say I am and that I work where I say that I work. And, because I have all of the work that I can handle through word of mouth referrals, I have no need of a website that might be used for verification.  Interesting dilemma, eh?  I’m a successful guy who can’t prove it.

And the providers with whom I’ve met in the past are either retired or not responsive to requests for referrals.  So that avenue is closed.

Can any one suggest any alternatives for providing verification that would satisfy a lady’s concerns for her safety (which I support 100%)?

Here is how I developed some references.  I visited MP's and got on a first name social basis with the receptionist.  (Bring them a gift now and then.)  They became my reference and other providers accepted that.  From there on it was up, up and away.

See if you have any links to you on the web to make her feel more secure.

Ask her for a 1/2 hour coffee day ( paying for her time ) to make her feel more secure.

The work thing kills me in my personal opinion.. Most le use businesses to set up girls anyhow.

Thanks for a great suggestion, Ciara.  I did find quite a few references.  I didn't know that arrest records were available on the internet. I also found out that I was outnumbered by a factor of at least 100 to 1 by my sister. Maybe I should ask HER for a reference!  Then again, maybe not; she's a lawyer.

The only thing that came up was that I am a word from the Monty Python sketch "20th Century Vole" that means "yes and no but not being indecisive." LOL

some indication of my sanity and being somewhat genuine when I say that I am a nice guy... "so she knows who I am"  and would at least know that the name is not fake, I am not le, and so on....  unfortunately, she found out that I am not so funny, and am an old dude... and really, really boring....  since reading about me I think that she has contemplated a nunnery, or some such as have others....

Unfortunately - I am so "verifiable" via the web, that there is no way that I can disappear... that is, my ex can ALWAYS find me!

And I wonder why some ladies I see, actually watch the TV!? another fell asleep,  lol, I am that boring.

You cannot be as successful as you say if you are indeed this unimaginative.

Use your brain.  Be creative.  Put some $ at risk.
