Over the last 10 years or so I've noticed a significant dropoff in my SO's sex drive. We've been through counselling but that hasn't really helped much. The other day she came back from her gynecological appointment with some news. She said her doctor told her that a woman's sex drive is related to the amount of residual testosterone in her system, and she apparently didn't even have enough for it to register on whatever test she took.

I'd never heard this before. Is it true or is she just making another in a long line of excuses?

All that testosterone that pulses thru men's bodies is what makes you guys want sex all the time. Women have lower levels of it normally.  If your wife doesn't have enough, her sex drive will be affected adversely.  Be prepared for her to want lots of sex if she gets some sort of decent treatment.  Getting testosterone back into her system can be problematic (she doesn't want to grow a beard!!)

I'm not a doctor, and there are always risks, but DHEA can increase testosterone in both men and women.

Hey guys--  after age 30, our testosterone drops about 2% per year. You do the math.  ;):

I don't have time to post links, but enter testosterone and DHEA in any search engine and you'll get tons of information.

Ok, here's one link with a sexy babe on it:

Thx for the info - I knew about hormones in general just not about Testosterone in women.

If she's got no testosterone why is she so confrontational?

Is there a hormone in women associated with running up tens of thousands of dollars in credit card debt??? If so how do I lower it?

not so simple as that. Do it right. Join up with the Life Extension Foundation and purchase one of their comprehensive blood tests. They have a male panel and a female panel. Both panels are substantially more thorough than those that most physicians will request. They involve extensive studies of blood chemistry, liver function, and sex hormone levels. For an additional fee they will test for your DHEA-s levels, your PSA levels ( a must for older guys !), your homocysteine levels (care to know if you are a candidate for cardiovascular disease ?), and your c-reactive protein levels.
Gulping a handful of pro-hormones without regard to your existing hormone levels and ratios is just plain nonsense. I was surprised to discover that I had normal testosterone levels,
but low progesterone levels, even for a middle aged male.
DHEA would not be the answer in my case. A women's progesterone creme , one made with real USP progesterone, massaged into the skin of the inner arm had a pronounced effect.
Others have reported DHEA may be associated with inducing depression. My personal experience comport with that.
On the other hand, 7-keto-DHEA, distributed by the Humanetics corporation through companies such as TwinLab, exhibited a powerful energizing effect. Too powerful by half in the 25 mg. capsule. Libido shot up to the point where I requied two women in a row within the space of an hour to feel completely relieved. Unfortunately, my blood pressure matched my libido,
I became as cranky and petulant as an adolescent, and my hair started to fall out at an increased rate.
7-keto-DHEA may be your ticket, but I would consider the lowest effective dose at which point you begin to notice an effect. That may be closer to the 5 mg. range, or on fifth of the supplied capsule. 7-keto is not a controlled substance in the united states, it is a controlled substance in europe, it does not require a prescription, but it is a potent para-steroid
that has strong pharmacologic effects. Handle with care, obviously do not take if pregnant, have high blood pressure, mental disorders (the brain is full of steroid receptors... why bodybuilders who abuse them get "roid rage" and grow strange breast tissue known to the trade as bitch tits), have any thyroid dysfunction, etc... you get the idea... streoids, pro-steroids, and steroid like substances are powerful, unpredictable, and can be dangerous.

What we have here is an interesting delemma.

We all age and pretty much we all don't like the process of aging.  Obviously people age differently just as people look different.  The question is just how much do you try to fool mother nature?  Or, more accurately fool around with mother nature? (now, now I'm not going there).

The hormones are needed for reproduction.  From the strictly bilolgical point of view, if we don't reproduce the species has no need for us and we become material to be recycled into the biomass.

Humans found out that sex was fun and served more purpose than just reproduction.  So we alter biology to serve our recreational needs by doing such stuff as birth control...and hormone replacement therapy.

As a result of taking these drugs, we invite side effects.  In the case of hormones some effects can be hair growth in females.  Something that our society doesn't particularly like.  But the real concern IMHO is their association with tumorogenesis.  That is they may cause cancer.  And that is something our society doesn't like either.

Well according to my SO's doctor testosterone suppliments also wreak havoc on child bearing and should not be used if you're planning on having kids any time soon. Wow what a catch-22!

We call it Menapause and it happens whether we want it or not.

There's a cream her OB/GYN should give her called "Estrace" it works miracles in restoring vaginal secretions and increasing Orgasms.
