Why are so many people afraid to stand behind what they say?  I do not use an alias, and do not plan on it.  Here is why.....Because I try to think about what I say(as in type into my computer and hit enter).  Do I make an ass of myself from time to time.....you betcha I do.  Called life, and maybe you learn by getting burned from running your mouth (just like I am doing now).  But to hide behind an alias and talk trash....Really.  Don't get that one bit.  No one is going to get shot for showing up here, and if you think LE is gonna get you for saying something a certain way, then don't say it that way.
Okay.......go ahead and school me on my ignorance, I am sure that I am missing something here.

If I look in Phone Book I am not going to see your name as WonderBoy and your Ph # against it, am I?

But then again.. Not all aliases are alike. For e.g. I use my TER ID "CurlyW - Nats Fan" to book meetings. When I send the introductory email to a gal, I tell her my ID. I also offer her to verify it using PM feature on the board. So she can verify that no one else is using my identity to book appts.  That's how I operate. Not saying everyone else should do it MY way. But this way has suited me just fine for last 10 some years.

Now If I want to make a sensitive post talking about how much I spent last year, I think that is a good reason to use an ID which I don't typically use while booking appointments, or talking with other mongers or providers, so I can have *some* level of privacy.

Yes, sometimes it is the guys using aliases for reasons such as taking potshots at others. and I'd rather use my real ID. I am really not that afraid to use it.. Some might be..

THat's why I use an alias.. I decided to use it as I was asking and sposting about what I had spent.. I have reviewed under the other name I use here.. and frankly, I don't want the lightbulb to go off for any of the providers I am with about where else I spent my money or how much I may be spending.. In fact, I changed to an alias when I posted that thread on purpose.. it's all anonymous sort of, except for the providers that I repeat with and I tend to do that.. They know when I have reviewed them and what I said.. One of them told me that I made her out to be a lot less nasty than she thought she really was.. so, the non-alias handle is not really anonymous sometimes..The alias is..

First of all, they can be a lot of fun, like my old one, Conan The Grammarian, who used to correct bad language usage.  Or J. Edgar Hooker who commented on LE issues.  You also can use an alias to ask for sensitive information you prefer not to be attached to your handle, especially if you use it for booking purposes.
I hardly ever use my alias and, yes, I will use it to flame sometimes.  So what?  Why does anybody care?  It's a fuck board and nothing said here by anyone means a damn thing in the "real world."

Okay Mr. CurlyW......You have convinced me that there is a place here for an alias to cover your hobby name.  I admit that I am naïve when it comes to the nature of internet usage, but you made sense with what you explained.  I just figure most like to sling shit at others while hiding behind the cover of an alias, but the business transaction of giving and receiving information without leaving a finger print, so to speak, is actually a good and wise practice.

Kudos to you Mr. CurlyW and thank you.

I will be heading into my corner now to lick my wounds, and get a towel to wipe all the egg of my face.  It is all good though, a hard lesson learned is better than no lesson at all.  Peace

lol. and haha too!

This here is just too funny.
.. I'd say for the guys it's no real biggie in using real or alias (here on this site)
..I'd say it gets real bad when more than one alias is being used... then that person just may well be hiding from "something... or someone"
But I hear ya.. or should I say "I read you" lol.
... Oh and no ignorance found!!1

Anywho.. a VERY HAPPY NEW YEAR TO ALL!

But seriously, how refreshing for someone to admit a miscalculation and eat humble pie.  Here's best wishes that you get to eat much juicier pies during this new year.

It is almost impossible to hide behind an alias , from someone that knows alias deciphering code .
After you've been here awhile , you "might" learn some tricks you don't know .

If I give someone grief, it's under my handle , if I'm joking around I use my one and only alias .

At least you said so many people, and not every one, or I would be calling you a dim wit . :-D

Never used an alias and never will! Hiding behind an alias to post something derogatory on a website is about as cowardly as it gets. Granted, maybe there's a good reason to use an alias every so often. More often than not, it's out of insecurity and pussification. Can't imagine what some guys are like IRL. Can't use the ignore function but I sure can skip reading their posts and not reply to their PMs.

If you want to stand up and voice your opinion, by all means go ahead.  But if you want to do under an alias, or anonymously, send a letter to the editor of your local newspaper.

It seems to me that most of the alias users are talking serious crap about some of the ladies because they don't like:  postings that have links to provider websites, opinions they don't like, opinions that "threaten" their supposed masculinity, bla bla bla.

I've seen some pretty nasty crap written here but are we not all in the same basic quest here?  Buyers of time and providers of time.    I got a PM from some UberEinstein completely slamming the shit out of a lady because she was over 40 and had some really fkin' hot sexy videos on her website and was offended by it because she wasn't under 20.   WTF?  Is this the Disney Channel or what?

It's all about establishing reputations here.  To hell with alias usage.  I've discovered some seriously smart ladies and expanded my horizons to one day connect with them, and made a friend or two because of what comes across from my words

where people (including me) listed a variety of good reasons to use an alias.  Here's another classic one, from today's New England Board.  The guy was flaming no one, asking for advice in a tough situation and clearly was better off not revealing his handle.

I fully agree with you, in this situation, that there is a legitimate need for the use of an anonymous post.
IMHO, the vast majority of alias usage is not of this nature, but one where the tone of the post is a most uncivilized one.

Since the boards are moderated, what if there was the option to submit a post to the moderator, requesting  the redaction of a user's name by the moderator?  If yes, then it's clearly stated "anon", and if no, then the original poster has the option to submit with their handle, or they can choose not to post.  Granted, it would increase the time between submit and post, but it may reduce the number of flames or offensive posts.

BTW, that message is pretty BSC and scary!!  I had not thought about using Tor, but sure gives food for thought!!   Thanks for the information and the opportunity to see a side of the issue I missed.
