I have been communicating with a lady via the forums, email, and TER Mail. Last night, when I logged onto Facebook, there she was in the "People You May Know" window! This is not an issue for me, but I would warn ALL USERS WITH FACEBOOK ON THEIR COMPUTER! It seems that Facebook is accessing cookies from other visited pages, just as Yahoo or Google do to individually target their online advertising. I keep my computer VERY clean out of habit - I clear my caches often, and nuke ALL cookies, but this is obviously NOT ENOUGH. Please be careful!

a couple of months ago, I deactivated my Facebook account. I wasn't presented with any information from the provider or anything crazy like that, and YES, I do use a separate email account for hobbying, but just the idea of FACEBOOK makes me uneasy.

People like us who whore monger should stay away from facebook. Just an opinion.

but given that I used a different e-mail address for all communications with providers, and that I have no need to keep my activities secret, I'm not sure it's an issue for me.

Facebook says "people you may know" to me about dozens of people that I don't know.  It's not a major security threat.  No one is outing you or posting the list of people you may know to the net.  It's just something that looks scarier than it is.

If you want to take extra security precautions, then use separate web browsers.  Hobby stuff in Chrome.  Real life stuff in Firefox.  Something like that.  Then there is no cookie cross contamination.

her on your page as "people you many know" let's anyone with half a brain know that there had to be some internet connection between the two of you.

And then does she have you on her facebook that will go out to others.  Watch out for the domino effect.

An unknown Internet connection between the two of you could be that her cousin was your college roommates friends, friend.  Like I said, Facebook makes tons of recommendations of people that you have no idea of who they are.

If you have a spouse that gets suspicious based on facebook's "people you may know" then you are doomed anyway, because she probably thinks that means you are trying to fuck every woman that you ride the bus with.

And if it's your cookies that led fb to recommend you, then her cookies would have to lead her to recommend you.  Which means that she is surfing your ad on eros, and googling for pics of you.  :-)

simply profiles that appear on profiles of people you have as friends.  I get strangers in my list all the time, I just ignore it.

No, it's not that simple at all. When I added My college to my profile Poof! I suddenly had a bunch of people added. Also, since I only recently made my account active I have no friends listed.

I used to think they used people who were in your e-mail mailbox, and I think they do, it isn't limited to that either.

There are people on my list I have NO connection to.

but Im not very worried about it.

The whole point of Facebook is to sell products through targeted marketing.  Making connections between people is integral to this approach.  Linking people through the connections, however seemingly innocuous, that they have made between themselves and others, is very effective.  But marketers need first to know who everyone is.

What about when when people make a rigorous effort to create different online "identities"?  This creates a challenge for the marketers.

Their answer is to use face recognition technology to know when all of the different "identities" are really one person.

This article gives a hint about the near future.

I use "In Private" settings for FB...  and TER...  which avoids a lot of tracking.  I have the tightest security settings on Yahoo & FB.  Especially disable messengers.   NEVER use FB to log in to other accounts.  They WANT you do do so, so they can track you.
Yes, there is a lot of risk to this electronic invasion.

What is more likely is that your lady added your email address to her address book, then permitted FB to scan that address book. Even if she did not Friend you, FB now has your email address, and knows it got it from her. So, suggests to you that she is among "People You May Know".

It's happened to me. Don't sweat it. But don't Friend her unless you want all your existing Friends to know her, too ;-)

My wife actually saw my "People You May Know" list one day, and asked me why it was largely populated by young, hot women. It turns out they are Friends with a young male colleague, and because we message frequently, FB advances his (hot young women) Friends on my list.

I just don't get the whole Facebook and twitter thing. I have no intention of joining either one.

Plenty of people asked me to, but the coming abuses of privacy were always apparent.  It will get a lot worse in the future.
However, people can fight it by joining/supporting organizations that advocate for privacy rights.

If either you or she used your "hobby email" as a facebook email or has one of the other in your contact list, that's how they gotcha. When you do the "Search for Friends" thing, it hacks your address book so wipe it out. I can't tell you the number of bs spam I get from client emails who can't simply clear that crap out..talking months down the road! Problem is, most guys only use a hobby email when they want to contact a provider and let the damn thing sit after that. Well, clear the contacts out!

If you are friends with a friend of hers or vice versa, it will also suggest people you might know...it's not a conspiracy if you know how it works.

FB app on phone can hook into phone CDR and address book
One the PC same thing. the way to protect yourself are well documented - google is your friend BUT the facial recognition stuff is real along with other advances in identity management. Oh and BTW - what happens when the carriers implement continuous monitoring :)

If you use FireFox go into Private Browsing mode, or in Google Chrome their is an Incognito mode.  Both will eliminate any trace of where you have been when you close the browser, and provides a safer web experience.
