Not just curse words, but the words boring and stupid as well.

I would not say that she is ballsy, I would say she is just stupid, if she thinks that banning the words is actually going to ban the thought behind them.

Censorship, Yeah that's the answer...NOT

Of course, the seven dirty words that one cannot say on television (presumably non-cable)are shit, piss, cock, cunt, motherfucker, cocksucker and tits.

Wonder what words the nun objects to?

Correction:
According to George Carlin, the words are "shit, piss, FUCK, cunt, cocksucker, motherfucker and tits".

I don't think the intention was to prevent the thoughts/feelings/emotions that people have, but to prevent the hurt and fighting that is caused by using some words and phrases that have become so common these days, especially among kids.

You can think all you want that someone is an asshole or bitch or whatever, but as soon as you start demeaning yourself (yes you are demeaning yourself by resorting to vulgarity) by swearing or calling names then people respond defensively and nothing else gets discussed except cursing and swearing. Express yourself better and others respond better.

A big problem with the way things are today is that so many people take the "freedom" that we have to the extreme and believe they have the right to say anything anytime in anyway they want without ever a thought of being polite to other people. I could even go on further to say that given the choice either in personal life or business life who would you rather hang with or do business with; a person who swears anytime they feel like it in any way possible? or someone who uses restraint and is polite to people?

This turned out to be longer than I intended so I will stop now, but I like nothing better than a good debate and this is a great subject for debate.

Censorship is still censorship, by banning words all you do is give those words power over you. You cannot simply wish words, or ill will away simply by forbidding their use.

I know that in a perfect world, everyone would be nicer to each other, but we don't live in a perfect world, and this is a free country. Banning words starts you down a slippery slope that ends up with a less than free society. I would much rather accept a little incivility at times than live in a country, or city, or shcool where free speech is regulated.

Actually, what's missing her the the whole question of context.

For example:  You can say: "I pricked my finger.", but not the converse (or is that reverse, or the inverse?)

In the name of decency, we have banned the use of the perfectly (at one time at least) descriptive term:  "imbecile", which was replaced with " mentally retarded", which was then replaced with "mentally disabled" and which, I'm sure, will be replaced soon enough again.

Similarly:  "negro" became "colored" which turned to "black" which became "Afro-American" which morphed (for reasons that I never did get straight) to "African American".  Now, surprisingly, I see people using the term "people of color" in various articles.

Does anyone see a pattern here?

Gay people were the most proactive and the most intellegent when they took the word "queer" and made it their own.  Talk about establishing respect!

Dick Gregory, the noted African American (born negro) comedian and civil rights author and speaker attempted the same thing back in the mid-1960's by writing a book entitled:  "Nigger".
It didn't quite catch on though, except in certain African American neighborhoods.

Censorship happens all the time, everywhere, in all aspects of life. Teaching kids that some words and phrases are not tolerated is teaching them some self restraint. I am sure you censor yourself all the time. Using this kind of teaching practice will help kids learn restraint and not become belligerant jerks that people think less of.

When dealing with people on a day to day basis, I actually think people who are vulgar and uncaring of others around them as less intelligent and a "bad person". That may not be true and I am jumping to conclusions, but with perception being the important part of interaction, not being able to express yourself intelligently usually means a lack of intelligence.

A parent who tells their child what they can or cannot say or do is also "censorship", but it is also "teaching". The censorship I would be worried about is ones targeted against informed adults who can make their own decisions how to handle life, not kids who have a lot to learn about life before they can make those decisions for themselves.

Remember this line?

"Boy, whatever you do to that chicken we're going to do to you"

"So I picked up that chicken, and I kissed it"

Dick Gregory was much funnier before he started helping the morbidly obese lose weight. I am sure he does a lot of good, if he's still alive, but he was much funnier in his youth.

that she also banned the use of the words boring, and stupid. What are your thoughts on the banning of those words?

BTW I do actually agree with you on the forbidding of children to use vulgarity. Self restraint is something that does need to be taught and parent and schools do have the right and IMHO the obligation to teach children how to be members of society and not foul mouthed little punks.

I agree. One must decide what they want; to be understood (discussing an issue in a manner that leaves the other person open to the point you are trying to get across), or to punish (make someone pay by hurting their sense of self-esteem). Usually punishment occurs after the person has given up on being understood. This particularly happens with couples, co-workers, friends, and other family members.

When you expose a person's vulnerability, their sympathetic nervous system (the adrenal response or fight/flight/freeze response) is triggered and the higher the adrenalin level, the more impairment to the higher level cortex of the brain, hence impairing perception, judgement and all of the other higher level cognitive processes. This is the emotion of shame, and is like stomping your foot on the gas pedal in your car.

Then, if you add a demeaning or contemptuous look, and derogatory name, you are adding the feeling of humiliation, because now you've over activated the para-sympathetic nervous system, which is like stomping on the brake in your car. Just as you don't want to have your foot on the gas and the brake at the same time, which will cause damage to your engine, neither does one want to experience this very noxious emotional and physiological state.

People learn very quickly to avoid such a state without even thinking about it (see the book "Blink," by the author of "Tipping Point."), and hence will avoid someone who may put them in that state. Got something to sell someone? Perhaps a product, a thought, a proposal? If you really want to sell it, best stay away from any comments that even have a mild whiff of punishment.

Imbecile, to mentally retarded, to mentally disable, has now become "special needs".

Unfortunately, it hasn't helped them much.

The only way this is ok is if the BANNED WORDS ARE PUBLISHED in the local media and POSTED in the school.

This way everyone knows what to say.

I did notice that and if there was a teaching session for the reasoning why they were banned then I wouldn't have a problem with it. Teaching kids, especially real young kids, that calling another kid "stupid" can hurt just as bad as "bitch" or "asshole" and sometimes even more so.

but what you can do is look at it for what it is....  insane.   I find many things offensive.... that people do everyday, and they involve none of these words....  they do involve stupidity and a lack of civility and a total loss of self-restraint.
