Is there any correlation that because a hobbiest slept with a provider and then had sex with his wife that he was the cause of a yeast infection?  This happened to me twice and I was wondering if its coincidence and/or has it happened to anybody else?  Definitely no STD.  Thanks.

What Are Yeast Infections?

Yeast infections -- sometimes called candidiasis -- takes many forms. Yeast fungus infections often develop where a moist environment encourages fungal growth, especially on the webs of fingers and toes, nails, genitals, and folds of skin.

Oral thrush is a painless, often recurrent yeast infection of the mouth and throat; it is common in babies, young children, and the elderly, but can affect all ages.

Moniliasis is a painful vaginal yeast infection experienced by many women, most commonly during pregnancy or treatment with antibiotics.

Balanitis is a less common but equally irritating infection of the penis.

Yeast infections can also occur on the skin, particularly in large skin folds in obese people. These infections are called intertrigo.

Systemic yeast infections can occur in cases of diabetes, AIDS, and other ailments or drug treatments that suppress the immune system.

What Causes Yeast Infections?

Candida albicans is a fungal organism, or yeast, that thrives in your mouth, gastrointestinal tract, and skin; your body produces bacteria that keep it in check. When fungal growth exceeds the body's ability to control it, yeast infection develops.

This can happen when you are weakened by illness or upset by stress. Modern antibiotics that treat many ailments can actually kill the bacteria that otherwise control fungal outbreaks.

Yeast infections are common among dishwashers and people whose hands are often in water, in children who suck their thumbs or fingers, and in people whose clothing retains body moisture. The diaper rash called candidal dermatitis is caused by yeast growth in the folds of a baby's skin.

Diabetics are especially prone to yeast infections because they have high levels of sugar in their blood and urine, and a low resistance to infection -- conditions that encourage yeast growth.

In rare cases the candida fungus may invade the bloodstream through an intravenous (IV) tube or urinary catheter used in hospitalized patients. If the infection travels to the kidneys, lungs, brain, or other organs, it can cause serious systemic complications, but these develop only in people who are seriously ill or who have other health problems that weaken the immune system, such as drug addiction or diabetes.

from penis to vagina, from mouth to mouth or any combination of the above.

In a normal healthy person, the vaginal flora stays balanced and yeast does not proliferate. Usually constant yeast infections are a sign that one is immunocompromised, due to antibiotic use, diagnosed (or undiagnosed) diabetes, multiple sex partners.

Of course your wife could just be prone to getting yeast infections. Some people are more prone to them. As for me I never get them, even if I take antibiotics. Then again, for the past six years I've only had sex with one person. So, that might tip the odds in my favor as well since I've only got one person's body fluids to deal with.

It's going to be very hard to tell whether this problem is recurring in your wife, or whether you are bringing it to the table.  But, if it sounds like your wife may be having some of the following problems, tell her you ran into your doc at the gas station, and asked him if it might be "your problem, and he gave you a few suggestions.  Maybe there are a few things she can do to help if it is on her end, or these may minimize the chance of her getting an actual flare up, even if you are introducing it.

My daughter has had constant problems with yeast infections; she's 7-1/2 years old.  It was a constant irritation for quite a few years.  Each time I would treat her with a topical Monistat, it would come back a few weeks later.

I finally found a pediatrician that nailed down the causes of the recurrent infection; during my daughter's baths she was sitting in soapy water and not rinsing thoroughly, and heat/moisture/poor ventilation, specifically during her sleep.

Using a large amount of soap in and around the vagina, or sitting in soapy bath water strips away "internal" bacterias that are needed to keep the levels of yeast to normal.  Frequently douching with scented formulas introducing chemicals, or a non-scented "extra strength" formula of vinegar/water solution will keep yeast infections coming back for the same reasons.  Providers have frequent problems with yeast infections because they typically douche more than the recommended frequency of once a month, but this can be avoided by using just plain old water, or a formula without extras (like scented formulas) and sticking the "mild" vinegar and water solution for frequent (more than once a month) douching.  My daughter strictly takes showers only now, and my pediatrician also suggested not soaping the vaginal area entirely, just rinsing liberally with water is good enough at her age.

On the moisture/ventilation angle, my pediatrician told me to have my daughter sleep without wearing any panties under her nightgown at night.  That in itself probably would have taken care of the problem entirely.  My daughter "sleeps hot;" gets sweaty throughout the night, but refuses to sleep without or kick off her down-filled comforter, even if it's 75 degrees in the house.  I finally convinced her to change to a light quilt, and sleep without the panties, and within 3 days the yeast infection was gone without having to use any treatment with the Monistat.

Stress is also a very large factor in frequent yeast infections.  My daughter had three surgeries in three years, and had a very stressful start overall.  This also contributed to the flare ups.  Those times around the surgeries, she would experience tremendous flare ups that were very painful and itchy.

Hope this helps!
