First off, find me one person (excluding Buddhists) who don't want to move up in society? Who doesn't want to live comfortably? Who doesn't want to have to not worry about bills? Who wants to know that all of their hard work in life has been worth it? Who doesn't want their future children to relax and not be stressed about affording school?

Social mobility is a dream that not many can achieve but some do. And I can't speak for every provider on here, but damnit, I want to be able to go to grad school in the fall, walk up to the financial office with stacks of hundreds and pay that school year in full. I want to be student loan free. I want money in the bank. I want to be able to have a great credit score and afford a nice apartment in one of the best cities in the world. I want to be able to have my parents relax and not worry about retiring.

I don't need nor want plastic surgery. I don't need designer things (though I won't lie and say I wouldn't be ecstatic with a Prada bag). But I will say that I want to be comfortable and worry free, and through providing, that's how I'm going to get there.

From what I've seen, this is usually by lip injections, boob jobs, tanning ( not a surgery, but relevant to my point ) or butt implants. I'm not familiar with the book, but I can see a lot of pressures in today's life that would lead women to conclude that the profession would make a viable career. I can't see class-climbing being at the top of that list. Sure, if you run a lathe you dream of having your own shop and buying a home and joining the country club one day, but that doesn't answer why you choose running a lathe over auto maintenance or whatever else is an immediate possibility for you.

And why "white" women? Is that a way of suggesting being in the life is just part and parcel to non-white women? I'm not even going to comment on the racist undertones to that.

Providers work hard. They she'll out to advertise and to provide a plant and maintain it with all the amenities. It's clear you don't know what "prestige imitation" is. It has nothing to do with class climbing - Mauss coined that term to show how we teach our bodies, which he considered our first and most important technology or tool, by watching people we respect or have authority over us.  It was sort of revolutionary in the 70s but is Anthro 101 now.

Esigg is a super liberal commentator on Forbes.  Her work "American Plastic..." Is an indictment against what she call the medical finance complex that allows people to go into heavy debt to get plastic surgery to increase self esteem - a marketing ploy invented by the AMA.  This caused downward mobility and was a factor to the economic collapse of 2008, according to her.  In other words the opposite of what you think its about.

As far as you mentioning Baudellard, he is a philosopher, not a scientist.  According to him we have lost all touch with reality and live in a world of false symbols.  As John Lennon puts it "Nothin is real - strawberry fields forever".  Trying to look like a movie star is a very small part of his view.  But he came to this conclusion after ingesting huge amounts of LSD, so yeah, I get where he's coming from.  I don't think he's ever come down.  I agree that paper money is a symbol and has no real value.  But it allows me to screw gorgeous women, so I'm ok with it.

Yeah but I'm saying if you were to take a look at the percentage of white providers who have undergone cosmetic surgery and compare that to the percentage of black/Latina/Asian providers using the same parameters, my guess is that it's probably pretty close.
