It's a crackdown on street prostitution so it won't affect escorts.  The police here have a far more enlightened and tolerant approach to escorts than in many parts of the US.

while I can't say anything about bobbies, I can verify that US politicians make ALL SORTS of mileage railing about sex of almost any kind.  Usually it's the local guy who has nothing better to do, but there are also national figures and groups.

I can understand why street prostitutes would be viewed as a problem. During a walk through Soho, I estimate that I was propositioned about every 5 feet! It was ridiculous.

That's true, doctor.  Unless they have info that under age girls, trafficked girls or drugs are involved they usually leave the 'indoor' side of the business alone.

That's how it's handled here in Toronto, as well. I sometimes think that they appreciate the 'under rug swept' aspect of escorting, although we're pretty tolerant about street work here, too.
