but yes, especially on regional boards, making posts like "Stay at the Hilton on the corner of First and Main" is a horrible and reckless thing to do.

you might try posting on your regional board and ask to be PM'ed with recommendations.

There are probably providers in EVERY hotel...  but public mention will bring LE to their door or YOU to the hotel's attention.

I'm perfectly fine with a 3 star myself (Courtyard by Marriott and similar.)

Redroofs, Econolodges, and similar are generally creepy and not very clean.

That's not one. If  there crime scene tape out front. Move on. And if when you jump on the bed a cloud of crab powder shoots into the air you may be in the wrong place

You are right, it's a dump.  I'm booked at the Sleep Inn next door before I leave. And since whoring is legal in Costa Rica it's perfectly OK to pass this along on the board.
I can also highly recommend The Cocal and Canciones del Mar in Jaco, CR.

To generally meet expectations you can go with a 4 (or 4.5, whatever that is...) star place.
But if you're going to say high-end or upscale in your ad I would stick with 5 star hotels (with those slippers and candy as mentioned above. )

There are so many sites out there where actual people have stayed and given feedback. Just make sure when you walk into the room you're not already on the bed, and look at what others have to say about it. It makes the difference because a hotel is only as good as it's staff, etc.
