Clothes advice...

I am going there for two weeks, beginning this Friday, and wondered what the women wore there. I know that when visiting churches and some museums you must have your arms and legs covered (from past trips to Italy). However, I haven't been overseas since 1987. I've heard they don't like to see tennis shoes, shorts (unless you're on the beach), tee-shirts with logos on them, flip-flap sandles or smock-style dresses. Italians are big on fashion, even if it costs them their last cent: They'll purchase soft leather shoes. What do the majority of women wear?  In the larger cities they dress more fashionable, but not sure about the Amalfi Coastline. Any suggestions? I'm thinking I should bring a lot of long, flowing dresses and capri pants. I might bring a few sundresses if they wear them, but it sure would help knowing what to pack.

Hugs,
Ciara

I was there 2 years ago, I wouldn't think much has changed. At that time gray was the in color, it seemed 8 out of 10 ladies were in gray. Now thats probably changed.
On the southern end near Salerno it isn't as fancy and I noticed more casual attire. But as you say the Italian ladies do like to dress to the nines, especially at dinner. I wish I could remember the name of this fabulous restaurant in Salerno, small, only 8 to 10 tables on the main street. I might have something on it at home, I'll pm you if I find it. Since the Amalfi Coastline is all on the beachfront it isn't as fashionable as the larger cities. However, the northern end by Sorrento is probably the more upscale. If you take the ferry over to Capri you'll find a whole range of clothing styles, I assume because its so touristy. But no matter where you go in Italy you can spot the Americans by their attire, jeans, tee shirts and tennis shoes. The Italians are much more upscale even when it comes to casual.
You'd no doubt get a more qualified answer from other women that have been there, but it seems to me you've got the right idea with the long dresses and sundresses.
I do know for sure what the women and men wore on the southern end of the Italian Riviera, but they were all nude beaches.
As far as the museums and churches, I really don't remember seeing arms and legs covered, but I also didn't see any mini's either. Anything else send me a pm.

I visited the Amalfi Coast in March & could be helpful regarding places to eat & stay, of which the hotel Sireneuse (http://www.sirenuse.it/) was favorite.  As to clothing, all Italians, like men everwhere, love to look at beautiful women.  They also appreciate texture & material. Therefore,  beautiful, slightly revealing sun dresses, leaher sandals, and anything that accents your natural attributes will be appreciated.  If you want more specific information, contact me directly on TER mail.

Tho I haven't been to that part of Italy, I've traveled pretty extensively in Europe.  I think you'll be okay if you pack as though you were going on vacation here; if anything, the Europeans are now more "American" than "Americans."  Take enough moderately dressy stuff to fit in if necessary; don't assume you can Always wear jeans, and you'll be fine.

Whatever you would wear there is what you would wear in any of the better beachside locations worldwide.  No shorts!, but short skirts always very welcome if paired with a conservative top and shoes.  Flats are OK so long as they're chic, of course, and bring one pair of heels.  Two handbags -- one for day-to-day, and an evening bag.  Pack lightly and get your attire dry-cleaned at the hotel to rewear the next week.  Bring a couple dresses, a pair of capris, a couple tops, two skirts, a few swimsuits, some sexy lingerie, some exercise wear if you're into working out or doing some outdoor activities....

Re evening attire, it's casual/resort chic.  Skip the skimpy mini (or save it for late night at home!), would attract undue and not positive attention to you and your beau.  Look for great fabrics, simple cuts, flattering, sexy silhouettes while maintaining a sense of discretion.... Italian designers are the best at this!!!!

Then, sunglasses, a chic hat, sunblock, and you're all set!  Enjoy!!!

PM me if you want more details but quite simply Italian women do not dress to the 'nines', they just look that way.  The key wardrobe ingredient is a beautiful silk that you can wrap around you like a dress but reveals your form (which you must flaunt with class and I think you have it).  Believe it or not, FLAT shoes, the simple kind like ballerina style or sandals (no heel or very slight wide heel) are not only beautiful but also essential since the sidewalks and roads are uneven and made of stones (not great for heels).  Beautiful silk or light cotton blouse, pretty necklace, widebrim hat (buy that in Italy of course!) and do not forget your sun glasses!!!!!!! (even at night).  You then pack in your purse a shawl, (silk again or pashmina or similar) which is nice for the evenings and can be drapped over your shoulders for visiting churches.  Italian women look great because they dress simply, elegantly and with sex appeal but rarely vulgar.  Have a great time!  Suggested aperitivo?  Campari soda.  Nice bright red drink.  Goes well with most outfits.

Oh so true about Italian women (and men). They can be very simple but classy. I actually like wearing a flowing dress or form-fitting dress with a beautiful shawl, very little makeup but dark lips. Or, dark eyes with light lipstick. Ooh, I'm getting hot just thinking about it!

Glad Kitty Kat is going to be safe and sound while you get out and get some wonderful sunshine!  Are you going alone, you courageous woman, you?!  I'd be hesitant to go alone, I might not come back at all, except that  my little Yorkie would be waiting for me ... I s'pose we have something in common.

Have a wonderful time. After you come back, I want to hear from you that I need to go there, as that, is my next destination, anyway ... Italy, that is.

xoxo

Talk about a Dr. Jekyll and Mr Hyde scenerio:

A client who I had seen a few times (but never overnight), invited me on an Amalfi coast trip this summer, and I was really looking forward to going.

Then, I realized the client, who heretofore had been so charming, was having mood swings as we made plans. I saw the inklings of substance abuse behavior but wasn't quite sure what to do.

When he got upset over a minor travel detail and said he might as well cancel the whole trip, I definitely saw the writing on the wall and bowed out of the trip.

I sure wanted to go to Italy and see the beautiful Amalfi coast, but I'll save up for it myself and go another time without being involved with a Jekyll and Hyde personality.LOL.

Have fun, Ciara--I'm sure you'll turn heads there!
