Humans were hunter/gatherers far before cultivation was even a gleam in our eye. The law of natural selection would dictate that stronger (wealthier) males would be able to extract favors from thier women in return for some form of compensation ie. better lodging, more food, protection, etc.  

Not much has changed even in the arena of marraige/dating. Its just more complicated now. I may be a little cynical but its seems that hiring an escort is less pretentious and 1000 times easier than dating or marraige.

I just said slightly less cynically.
