This crystallized the issues very nicely for me as only a person directly affected by this could relate.

The stigma that goes with this profession is a sad fact.. I believe in my heart that most women in this field would be more willing to stand up and speak for themselves and fight for thier own freedom to choose if they were not in fear of losing thier children, homes and families..

being a sex worker is because it is illegal and carries such a negative stigma as many feel they must hide it from even those that love them. Those so call do-gooders are making it worse for the ladies they claim to want to help.

Of course, we would!  But so many of us lead a double life because we have to!  Even if "this" was decriminalized, we would still be stigmatized.  But no longer would we be risking our children being taken from us for what we do to survive.

This is a complicated topic but one that is so important to those of us who fall into the category of "the invisible majority", which a lot of us are who earned our living through the internet and we don't have management or walk the streets.  Although I don't feel that there is anything wrong with walking the streets.

Just glad that I don't have to.

What a great article and right on the money. At least BP get's the pimps out and visible so they can be spotted and arrested. Putting them underground will make them harder to be caught and less likely those who need to be rescued will be.

Unfortunately, legalization doesn't remove the stigma.  Legalization helps (sex workers in other countries can pursue charges if they are victims of violence while working, sue clients for lack of payment, etc), but sex workers are not 'respected' members of society anywhere.  Accepted, perhaps.  Appreciated, maybe.  But rarely does anyone go out of their way for sex workers.  If a guy does, he's assumed to be some sucker disgusting John.  If a women, does, she's assumed to be a sex worker herself.  Their status in turn goes down.  I have seen wonderful unselfish hardworking idealistic people become the butt of jokes, lose most of the respect they once had, and become disillusioned.  I have watched hundreds of thousands of dollars pissed away trying to make things better for sex workers but nothing happen due to apathetic and incompetent people on all sides.

It's hard for a lot of people to remember that sex workers are people too.  Nothing special, but nothing less special either.

I felt a cold chill after reading that. All the more reason for all these women to insist whoever they see write a review on TER. It would give them stability and strengthen their networking options.

We all know the ugliness is out there. Thankful for the gentlemen of TER.
