Michael Savage. He is the number one attention seeking scum dumb ever to pull such a stupid stunt.

After all these years the autistic community finally gains a level of tolerance that the US works with and this jerk tries to ruin it.

Ruin the chances to be able to grow up as an American in a free world which shows great promise of producing a solution of improving their lives and not be institutionalized?

I hope he loses his spot there on the radio as he's seeking attention from a very sensitive group. He is by far a stupid idiot.

If he would look at the EEG's of these children he would, if he was really honest, see that it is not purely a behavioral issue. Of course, often family members can develop ways of relating with the child that can make things worse. Treatment for these children encompasses a multitude of factors; medical, physiological, neurological, dietary, behavioral, psychological, sensory deficits, socialization, vocal communication, etc. It's a very complex condition and having someone try to make it otherwise, especially in a pejorative sense, is a great disservice to these children and their families.

As a mother of two autistic kids I would love to spend some quality alone time with this Savage ass wipe. -e

But I have been around a few autistic children. I coached youth sports for 20 years and taught in primary school.

If someone is taking away from what little resources, compassion and understanding there is for autistic children and their famlies.....I pity them.

so being one who lives it, what is your take on the vacination issues. I have heard a great deal of things and was always interested in what one involved thinks of it all.

Don't believe the dribble coming outta the stenographers typewriters, Savage was misquoted, I heard his show that day and he TOTALLY supports and protects children more than the entire DNC and RNC combined; though that's not a great sum.

...and I'm sure I'll get ripped apart for it.

#1 - certainly there is autism & there is suffering due to it.

#2 - Savage can be very insensitive.  I can be, too.  Especially if I'm all fired up.  It's easier for him to get that way - being that he's a media person.  But being a media person - he also bears more responsibility for his actions / words.

#3 - it ruins nothing.  It brings attention to autism and to Savage, if anything.  It'll be over inside of a week.

#4 - The great promise of producing a solution??  Just like the cures for cancer & AIDS??  Autism has been around for decades - yet there is no method of diagnosis besides behavioral symptoms.  There is no cure, because they do not know the cause.

#5 - The CDC reports the following:
"It is clear that more children than ever before are being classified as having autism spectrum disorders (ASDs). But, it is unclear how much of this increase is due to changes in how we identify and classify ASDs in people, and how much is due to a true increase in prevalence."    See CDC link below.

( edited here to reflect that the following paragragh - is not from CDC but are my comments - and kudos to zisk for showing it to me )

Is there any chance that some doctors or drug company executives are willing to see mis-diagnosing occur?  They're not wringing their hands together and saying, "Show me the money!!"???  Same thing goes for some of the cancer & AIDS researchers.  No grant money = no job.  Even if it's only 10% who do that - isn't that billions of $$ taken from those who need it??  They're a greater problem than Savage.

#6 - Firing Savage won't hurt him one bit.  He's probably a multi-millionare.  He might consider it a favor and retire or take it to court like Imus did.

OK, then.  I think that I've said some "real world" truths here - except I could be off on # 3 - "over in a week".

I'll "listen" to comments. flames, etc - but please don't think that I don't care about kids.  Your kids, my co-workers kids, my neighbor's kids, Any kids.

And no, I don't have any kids.  2 nieces & a nephew though.  And HIV took my brother.

#5 doesn't mean the CDC considers increased classification of autism as misdiagnosis. More likely that its due to better understanding of autism now, so that many children in years past who were actually autistic were not properly classified then.

#6 if Savage would consider getting fired a favor, why doesn't he just quit? Then he would be doing the rest of us a favor.

Very true on # 5.

I should have seperated the misdiagnosis comment from the CDC one.  I'll do an edit to reflect that.

I guess my other point should have been that firing him may not hurt him.  "Favor" might not have been best word to use.

Admittly, I do listen to Savage ( and other talk show folks ) on occasion - but I'm not a fan.  I measure what he says against good common sense & real world possibilities.  I also like to know the full content of what someone says, not just a sound bite or a clip.

So, deep down, I'd like to think that I'm not biased & can look at things objectively.  Ergo: a rise in #'s of cases could include misdiagnosis.  Perhaps it's very small, but it certainly can be happening.

Thanks for the comments (and non-ripping, LOL!!)

Don't lump me in with the rest of us..I like having confrontational free speech from all sides..Otherwise I would move to China..
I would like to add I think the libs should always be allowed to twist things to suit their agenda..
What Savage was saying is medicines are "vastly overprescribed" and if todays Drs. had Einstein in first grade they would have stifled his creativity with drugs..If  you don't think thats true take another Zanax or is it Zoloft??

Hi Shelby,

Not listening is certaining an option.  There are others also.

1st - let me do a little back-story.

I end up listening to Savage because I always go over to my Dad's place & we have dinner together.  He's retired & has been a widower for a few years, now.

Dad's sight is not too good, so TV, videos, etc aren't very exciting for him.  So, he turned to radio, and since music doesn't do much for Dad, either - he listens to talk-show radio.

So, I listen to Savage.  BUT, I certainly DO NOT agree with him on all of his views.  Especially, with remarks like the ones that caused this controversy.

OK.  What am I really trying to say here??

There are options like:
A - maybe don't listen at all.
B - maybe listen and agree/dis-agree with him on some topics
C - maybe listen until you totally dis-agree with everything that he says / supports.  Then stop listening.

Thanks,
Manny
