I would use word "manipulate" only if one party is being unaware that someone is trying to alter his/her behavior.

I think people can willingly participate in "suspension of disbelief" -- and this applies to the illusion.  The actual process of GFE is absolutely illusion rather than manipulation.

And, absolutely, I agree -- it really can be practically magical.

But the GFE magical illusion is a separate thing from marketing/advertising/sales.

Almost all advertising and marketing is a form of manipulation in that it attempts to cause a person to undertake behaviors or make purchases that would otherwise not happen had s/he not been exposed.

Not all manipulation is badly-intended, of course -- and not all of it is focused on the unwitting. In addition, some of the intended behaviors might even be in the best interests of the person being manipulated. Witness, for example, various anti-smoking advertising. In fact, savvy marketers actually formulate win-wins.

I deal with sales-people all the time. Almost universally these days, companies send out super-pretty women to sell me stuff. And that, in and of itself is a form of manipulation. It doesn't work with me, of course; but it doesn't hurt me either.

So rather than call up the company and berate them for an obvious attempt to stack the deck; I simply enjoy the fact they think influencing me is important enough to start recruiting hot women with PhDs to call on me. (*grin*)

So I definitely distinguish between manipulation (marketing/advertising/sales) and the product being sold (illusion/magic).
