Do we really have that many members who think 'definitely' is spelled 'definately' or are
all those review writers really the same guy using a half a million aliases? How much weight do you give to a high rating by a reviewer who leaves in many misspellings and typos?

Maybe we should have a spelling bee board.  So when ever someone corrects someone else's spelling, some other self appointed hallway monitor type can direct all the spelling authorities to the Spelling Board.  That would be a super keen way to involve both our discussion board spelling buddies and our discussion board redirection buddies at the same time with each other.  And if the hallway monitors are also the straight A spellers, we could call their board the School of Masturbation.  If they really are different people (yeah, right) we could call it the Circle Jerk Club.

But that's just me.  I don't have certification in Humanities from the City College online extension program.

Me thinks someone has too much time on their hands. I wish I only had other people's spelling to worry about. JMHO

punctuation, run on sentences and lack of appropriate caps drive me up the wall. And yes, it really does impact my perception of the writer's intelligence and respect for others and them.

and with the exception of "speeling" and "youz", everything checked out fine.

By the way, "youz" is perfectly acceptable slang in Brooklyn, NYC.

But then again I speak/read/write multiple languages and at times I simply just can't be assed to go back and proof read.

But seriously who really cares about perfect spelling? How can someone's life be so meaningless that typos will cause you to go into a fit rage while turning green. Ok fine I will not make you angry I am sure I would not like you when you are angry!

*rant off*

on this board.

It was not so long ago that people didn't really give much thought as to what spelling was used as long as the meaning was clear.

Even a lumnary like Shakespeare (Who, by the way, spelled his own name in a variety of fashions but never in the form used today.) was very unconcerned with standarized spelling.

Perhaps it was the explosion of words caused by the printing press and the rise of industry and science in the nineteenth century that caused people to become concerned with standardizing spellings, but I think there is more to it than just that.

What is says about us as a society, I am not sure.

Are we a nation of anal retentives or just very scholary  (and is there a difference)?

I'm having a hard time with a keyboard and mouse let alone a dictionary in my hand so except me for who I am, this isn't a Ivy League School, it's TER.

Being both spelling-impaired and sort of forgiving, I tend to think that many of these misspellings are actually  innocent typos.

Hey, you can't spell, you can't spell.  You probabbly can't run a marathon eithe, or lots of other things.  The world goes on.  As long as the review seems to be internally consistent, no harm done.

Just my mindless 2 cents worth of play money.

As alluded to, the idea is to be understood. And I'm certain there are as many good spelling Liars as there are honest folks. (Attorneys come to mind) LOL!!!

And if there IS an area that really relies upon spelling, it probably is the Legal documents we deal with.

My pet gripe is with job postings that are riddled with errors, yet demand "attention to detail and spelling".

I don't get worked up about the spelling.  I make plenty of typos and spelling errors myself.

The ones that piss me off are the folks who start a post with some form of "I know this is the wrong forum, but wanted more exposure" like their post is so damned important and deserving of so much attention that they intentionally put it in the incorrect place so those of us who wouldn't step into (usually) P&R on a bet can't miss it.

Rant off.
