If they always “act nice” online, it could be an act; they could be an asshole in real life. But based on people I know both online and in person, almost always those who always act nice online are like that in real life.
Those who always act like assholes online might not be such big assholes in real life, but they have some issues causing them to act like assholes online. I’m not a psychologist, so I won’t go into what those issues could be.
The most interesting cases are those who are assholes online only some of the time. Sometimes it’s because they fight back when attacked. But if the assholery is unprovoked, those are the people with whom I watch my back the most.
