If I'm at work - which has a company wireless network in the office - and I'm logged onto the wireless from my personal smartphone - can the company's IT people see what sites I go to on my personal smartphone?

Asking for a friend....

If all you're doing is picking up a cell tower, different story. Then, the NSA can monitor your ass.

This of course depends on the logging function in whatever switches and routers in your work place. And the skills and spare time of your IT nerds... Just get your IT guys some cheap BBBJ's form fat-chicks off of backpage at the next company Christmas party and snap a few pics of it with that smartphone of yours and leave copies of the pics in your phone's photo-folder. if they are ever hacking you someday, they'll know to leave you the fuck alone about your site traffic over the company WiFi!

Yes and more YES!

As long you are logged onto the company's network... wired or Wi-Fi, everything is logged.

If someone tells you something different, they don't know how corporate network works.

How would the IT department link his phone to the porn traffic? The company IT department doesn't know it's MY phone that is connected to their network - they just know that someone's phone is connected. How do they make the leap to know it's MY phone?

If they know what they are doing and my guess is they do. It is rather simple to figure out who logged in where and at what time.

A word to the wise, “Don’t play with fire”. In many companies, it is grounds for termination.

If they have unsecured wireless or you log in using a guest account, they won't automatically know its your phone, but it might not be too hard to figure it out I they really want to know who keeps hitting www.hotmilfs.com at work.

If you are signing in from home using your companies WIFi setup they are monitoring it as well. Also, ALL information is kept for a number of years.....so much like the IRS if they find something they can go back and look at past imformation. Every keystroke is recorded and ever "deleted" emails are kept in an archieve.

My blackberry always said Chicago for some reason. If you go to www.hidemyipaddress.com or something like that, you can see what IP is showing up from each device you use. If an employer wants to find out who is searching x site, their IT guys will be able to find you. To the average person like me who does not know much about computers besides the basics, no way, but these guys are trained to know what to look for.

Yeah, they will know the IP of your device but they might not readily know who owns the device.  Like I said, they could figure it out, but not automatically from your network traffic. If they wanted to know who was using the IP they could look at sites visited (porn, probably male, and he seems to hit a Facebook page for John Smith a lot, who works here), usage patterns (auto-joins) networks every day when he shows up for work and is range of the building, lets check the security cameras), movement patterns (he switched from 1st floor to 3rd floor router at 2:58, lets see who had a 3pm meeting on the third floor), etc.

I would worry more about your service provider turning over all their files to the NSA, the NSA is subpoena-ed by the private dick your wife hired to gather evidence for your upcoming asset division in divorce court... yea, could happen.

If that phone also has a work email account setup on it I could know it was your phone pretty easily. Also, chances are your "friend" probably named his phone something stupid like Joe's phone.
