I was watching Rehab last night. There was a bachelor party for some guy who lied to his fiance' about where he was. He spoke to her on the phone and she found him because she has a GPS Application in her phone! Can anyone who wants to, do this? If I were him I would NOT marry this chick. She stalked him and his friends to the Rehab pool party! Lame.
Does anyone know anything about this GPS Application? How does it work? Can it be done to anyone anytime?? Friggin scary if you ask me.
You can't access the location (network or GPS) of another phone just using an app.
You can, however, if you are on the account with the service provider sign up for tracking services of another phone. For example, I have a second line on my mobile account. I could sign up for a service to track the phone at any moment in time. Also remember, the location info the SP keeps on each subscriber is NOT protected by any privacy laws. In general, they don't give it to anybody, but there is nothing stopping them (maybe you have a friend at the service provider office) from releasing the info.
I saw an article where SPRINT had created a web portal for LE to access location info on subscribers. The site had 8 million hits in a one year period.
Someone please correct me if I'm wrong, but I saw a similar application on Verizon HTC Incredible. The app allows you to create a "buddy list". Your buddies must accept your invitation, and only then you can locate each other using gps.
and there is a program that I can broadcast my location. I noticed this last week when I first used my GPS. It asked me if I wanted to broadcast my location. I said "Yes" unknowingly, but it kept alerting me that anyone that calls me or connects to me with that app would know my location through Google maps. I of course quickly turned it off.
on my Incredible (and I think all other cellphones now), you can enable "location" apps which help in navigation, etc, but one cannot turn off the basic GPS function. Thus, whenever the phone is on (and some claim, even when it is not) the location is easily tracked in live time or for later review. I do believe the challenge to individual privacy rights is real and already of great consequence.
maybe ring central might be the way to go. You can get a phone number that rings directly to your phone without revealing your personal number. You will still get all of your calls. But it would be completely private. Just a thought.

LOL Not that Google in itself is private. However if you get a phone number from Google that directly rings your private phone number, IMHO it may at least help keep anyone from trying to use GPS to discover your location. Just a thought. If not Google, ring central is good too. You can register with any name you like that has no connection to your personal information.
I think it is important to stay one step ahead. Our privacy is becoming more and more at risk every day as newer technologies continue to arrive on the scene.
Yes, it obscures your number from the provider, which is good only if the provider goes psycho and wants to out you. If LE busts them, and they have your GV number, they can get the logs from Google to see what you other number is.
IMO, something like a TRAC phone (or other pre-paid) is more anonymous as long as you use cash, etc. Also, do not activate from your home or work place, etc. Use a laptop with WiFi at a hotspot.
