And co-written by Alan Moore, no less. Fascinating. (eom)

Finally finished my lastest bit of reading. Lost Girls is an excellent piece for the well read in both culture and history. It is surprisingly well layered, hidden delights awaiting the active mind.

Three characters from famous fiction meet each other at an Austrian hotel. Alice, an aging aristocrat. Wendy, a middle class housewife. Dorothy, a young woman wanting to explore the world.

The reader learns that the fantasy worlds each of these girls constructed was a way of coming to terms with their earliest sexual experiences. By sharing their stories, the grown women find the lost girls inside themselves.

It is set against the background of the spark that ignites WW1. The passionate loss of their innocence juxtaposed against the horrific loss of innocence for all human kind. A moment of indulgence, laid on the cusp of the death of decadence.

The art work is stunning, and often quite symbolic, little details that are easy to miss tease the eyes. The way the styles change is fascinating and obviously intentional. My favorite part is the book inside the book... The Austrian hotel has an erotic graphic novel of it's own which we get to read along with the various characters.

It is at times ludicrous, vulgar and cheeky. However, it also contains some of the most passionate and sensual words I've ever read. It is a large hard cover, not easily hidden. However, well worth the adventure if you dare.

Quotes:

A chapter that explores the Deadly Sins

Envy:

Swimming, streamed with salt, abob with your love-licked, nest of curls. I weighed those breasts more pale than curds and wanted nothing more, nor did my glistening lamprey make complaint that nosed amongst your coral pinks. Contented in all the world was I until you smiled, whence satisfaction fled. I envied what you were, that I could never be: The one spread pierced and worshiped under me.

Wrath:
Amok as fabled Hakate, eyes spitting like burned elm she rails against me, set ablaze by spite. Snake-fisted, fierce with scourges, now she promises to flay the skin off my back. Vows torments Nero belched at. If she finds me, she will surely murder me, trample my spine beneath her perfumed heel. I cower and hide, and in an ecstasy of dread, I fear she will not find me.

thank you for the preview, laurensummerhill.  I could use a good summer read, but I'll have to make sure that my teenage son doesn't get a hold of it!

Keep us posted on any others.  I appreciate it.

I was just so excited to hear about this book from you, Lauren!!!

I already have a copy on its way and well, I'm jumping up and down in anticipation.  It's so rare to find something to read that's obviously going to be somewhat hardcore and provocative that actually will push even my boundaries.

Thank you so much for posting this!

Hope you're well.

Sincerely,
Elisabeth

I must admit that this has made me terribly curious about the world of erotic novels. I'd love to hear what you think when you've finished it.

as no matter how much we may worship your eyes, your lips, your breasts and all your orifi (is that a word? - lol), there is no organ so sexy as the human mind.  Great literature and creative musings can lead us to places our bodies can barely imagine.

Blowing a soft and sensual kiss your way in gratitude!

This book is one of the most different pieces of literary porn that I've ever read.  Or rather, seen.

It's a picture book with captions.  The captions are polite and read well but overall, the book was completely different than what I expected even though I had read the reviews!!!

It's a gorgeous hardback.  And when you look at the cover, you do not have an idea of the smut that you'll see inside.  I would imagine some of the things that they feature isn't allowed to be discussed on this board.  But the illustrations are gorgeous.  Just fantastic, really.

But with that, I haven't finished it but I will.  I loved getting the book and looking through it this weekend.  VERY different.  But don't let family members find it if you lead a double life like a lot of us do.

Some portions of the book would be shocking to most.  Me?  Not so much!  Grin.

Lauren, thanks for the suggestion and recommendation!  It was a treat!

Sincerely,
Elisabeth
