The Troops

It is the Troops, not the minister
Who has given us freedom of religion.

It is the Troops, not the reporter,
who has given us freedom of the press.

It is the Troops, not the poet,
who has given us freedom of speech.

It is the Troops, not the campus organizer,
who has given us the freedom to demonstrate.

It is the Troops, not the lawyer,
who has given us the right to a fair trial.

It is the Troops,
who salutes the flag,
who serves under the flag,
and whose coffin is draped by the flag,
who allows the protester to burn the flag.

God Bless the Troops

I always take the time to thank our men and women in uniform wherever I see them.

Great post.

As a former Marine and Army SF guy I know what it is to serve and appreciate all that sacrifice to protect the freadom we all hold dear.

For all my comrads who aren't around to read it, and all those fighting in countries where they aren't allowed to read it.

Well said.

of uniform

but for me it is bittersweet, for this was not always the case

When I returned from my second enlistment and two tours in VietNam, I decided to go to college, do something else with my life.

My reception was so intensely negative, so hate filled, that I decided to make the USN my home, my family, my country. And I do not regret a minute of it.

But for many years I had no iterest in returning to the states as a civilian.

And I know all to many who have not fared well returning to civilian life.

It has only been since Desert Shield/ Storm that I have seen a return to a generally high and positive regard for those who wear the uniform.

And I appreciate it deeply.

I only would wish that Uncle Sam would take better care of those who have given all or a part of their health or wellbeing to this great country.

Decoration Day / Memorial Day wishes to all especially those who have served, and the families who have somebody in harms way.

I miss my friends.

Thanks for the tribute to the men and women in uniform.  I know many at this time in history share the sentiments of appreciation expressed, but those of us who served in Vietnam (two tours as a young Marine officer who fortunately got to come home with his ass in one piece) remember that we were not held in high esteem by many, if not most, Americans when we did come home and transitioned to civilian life.  Also, many of us—myself included and so many with whom I served—could not even talk about the experience for a very, very long time; and still yet, when visiting the Vietnam Veterans Memorial on the DC mall, experience considerable anguish.  Appreciation for the service for our men and women in uniform is much better now, as it should be.  My eldest son, now a Marine officer, and his colleagues receive the respect due them.  Again, thanks for the post reminding us that our liberties come with a cost, come with sacrifices made by many in uniform.

The Army was founded 14 June 1775.

Stay safe Brothers.
