Not all ladies have tattoos.  I have one and it on my shoulder blade.  My hair covers it up most of the time.

Don't you think you are being judgmental by asking how a lady explains it to her children?  If a lady has a tattoo does that make her a bad mom?

I understand that you do not like tattoos but you don't need to go there.  A lady's children are none of your business unless you helped her make them.

My skin may be virgin (save for an ear piercing), but I don't get the antiquated attitude regarding tattoos. How do they explain them to their children? That sort of question only works if "mommy" feels she has done something bad by adorning her skin. Would you have the same negative attitude if the lady in question cut or colored her hair in a particular way? Got liposuction or a boob augmentation (enhancement or reduction)? Got a tan? These are also body alternations, and many of them are quite permanent. Where's the difference in your mind?

While I am not a fan of lots of ink. I do understand the desire to be unique. I got mine because I thought they were attractive and I wanted to have something on my body that no one else had..

 Generations and times change. Sad fact, but most of us have a hard time changing as we get older rules and morals change of society.. It's just a fact.. change is good even if we don't embrace it.

I don't understand why the young kids want to get pierced everywhere. But, to each his own.

WTF girls are thinking when they go ink crazy? This touches on a pet peeve of mine. Having your daughters name tated on your body, and then working under that name.(classy)

It has nothing to do with providers or even female vs. male.  I'm late fifties.  When I was in college, I recall how a risque it was for a woman to have even the smallest tattoo in a discrete location.  Now....just check out any Walmart or 7-11!

I equate a tattoo to a person (woman or man) deciding on a putting on a piece of jewelry that they really like.  People are attracted to jewelry and like to self-adorn.  Same with tattoos.  However, once they put on the tat, they can never remove it or have another piece of adornment in the same location for the rest of their life.  

People (men/woman) desiring tats would be wise to avail themselves of the tattoo artists using the new pigments available that are ten-times more sensitive to laser destruction than the usual pigments.  Thus, changing one's mind in the future is not nearly as painful and disfiguring.

I am not a big fan of tats myself, but it never ceases to amaze me just how narrow minded and judgemental people in the hobby can be.

You would think that people that are looked down upon by "polite members of society" will be a little less judgemental themselves, but that sure isn't the case.

Maybe for the most part tattoos don't enhance anything. But when I take a look at Amsterdam, or even Krista Starr I see a lot of beauty in them and the art they are wearing. I am sure the tattoos have a meaning to them that we will never understand. I also don't think I would look at them the same without their ink. I think it is Beautiful. I would the chance to see if it rubs off on me lol.

If you're on this board, most likely you're either a whore or someone that sees whores.  There's also a good chance that you're cheating on your SO.  Basically, if society knew more about you, they would hate you.  So why marginalize others?

As for tattoos, it's just a personal preference.  The car you drive, the clothes you wear, the jewelry you own, the hairstyle you like, etc.  It's all just the aesthetic you prefer and the lifestyle you live.

That's a personal preference, however. I think fake boobs are nasty 90% of the time, and tan lines 100% of the time. That's a personal preference. If you enjoy breast enhancement and tan lines, that's all well and good, but there's no way you can "prove" the value of these body alterations to me, someone who despises them. Same with tattoos.

I think they are (or can be) beautiful. They have the potential to tell a bit of a story, like a roadmap of the individual's experience while on this planet, and a bit of their thoughts and values. Do they have the potential to be aesthetically terrible? Sure. Poorly considered ink is like running out the door with the nearest pants and top without even the most basic thought to fit, form, or pairing. The former may be more permanent, but both show a complete lack of care for oneself or any effort concerning attention to detail. Tattoos also open the door for more spiritual experiences in some people. They might serve as reminders to stay on spiritual track, or in some cases the act of painstakingly researching, crafting, and inking the tattoo in question has opened new spiritual doors for some dear friends who opted to go the ink route. Unlike breast augmentation or a tan, tattoos may adorn the body, but their primary function may or may not be to beautify in the most physical sense of the word. As a vehicle for expression, I personally think this makes them all the more beautiful.

Now, does this help you understand a bit why I personally find tattoos beautiful? Perhaps. Do you yourself suddenly find them beautiful and want to jump on the tattoo ho train? Probably not. I can only tell you why I find them beautiful just as you can express why you may find another form of body augmentation beautiful. This may result in an understanding of each others' preferences, but will still nearly always result in an "agree to disagree" situation.

People of both sexes get tattoos because they want them. WHY they want them is as individual as the person.

Some people get tattoos to commemorate people, events or ideas that are important to them. Some, because they think it looks pretty.

Among men (but not women) getting a tattoo is actually a sign of high genetic quality. (Please see http://www.scientificamerican.com/article.cfm?id=survival-of-the-tattooed) In essence, these men are sufficiently attractive to start with that they can afford to throw off their symmetry.

In my opinion, and it is only my opinion, tattoos are most often a visible way of transmitting the idea to the world that you are someone who defies social norms. Obviously, as they become more pervasive they have less meaning in that regard. But they mark the person as someone who is an individualist. There are of course various other ways that people advertise to the world their willingness to defy social norms, however. Tattoos are only one of them.

The reason sometimes these are associated with women being "loose" or "available" is because a person who is willing to defy a social norm in one aspect of life is likely to defy social norms in other aspects of life too, including sexuality. It just so happens that we have a very twisted social view of sexuality in which men having many sex partners, often with a minimum of emotional connection, is seen to be good whereas women behaving the same way is seen to be bad. Even so, the defiance of social norms may not involve sexual ones, and so making that assumption can be a quick route to a slap. LOL

So the fact a woman has a tattoo shouldn't be taken in and of itself as reflecting that she is willing to break social norms pertaining to sex or that, if she does break such norms, she would do so with you particularly because even people who break social norms regarding sex still have standards.

Over time I have dated many women who had or did not have tattoos. While my own personal preference is without, I have found tattooed women to be disproportionately reflected among my civie sex partners anyway; likely because I have a strong preference for women who are individualist thinkers and this preference overrides practically all others.

Basically, when the right girl meets the right guy, such things become superfluous considerations of no import; and explaining them to children is easy enough.

Original poster: Just because you may not be a fan of tattoos does not mean everyone feels that way. For every person who prefers blondes there is someone else who prefers redheads or brunettes. For every woman who likes super toned tanned hairless men there are just as many who prefer a man with hair on his chest and more to love. I read many boards and there is always someone complaining or questioning the look or style of others because its what they personally don't like. There are millions of ladies in this world, and they are individuals. If you don't like their personal style you don't need to see them. There are plenty of men out there who prefer tatted gals over non tattooed ladies. As for your question regarding how they choose to explain their tattoos to their children you may not realize you are way out of line asking about someone's parenting or their children especially on such a discussion board as this. It was not appropriate period.

As for the guy who commented about a gal who had her daughters name tatted on her and then she worked under that name wow I think I met the same girl you did- yes I agree I thought it was in poor taste as well.

Back to the tattoos issue, I have three very tasteful tattoos, two are in the midst of being removed as I have outgrown them. Times are different now then they were when our parents grew up and you were stuck with a tattoo for life. I got my tattoos with the full consideration that I knew I could someday get them removed if I changed my mind.

And I'm not "back."  Just bored with the boards.  So FYATWYRIO.

To this late wave boomer, it seems to be a cultural thing associated with being cool, such as having long hair as a guy back in the '70's.  To these later generations, ink and piercings are more mainstream.  Personally, I once used to hate the tats on the ladies, but I have learned to appreciate and enjoy them.  Part of being being cool is learning to stay cool...
