I watched the "undercover" investigation on Anderson Coopers 360 on CNN that got all the hype back up about it. The thing that frustrated me was that she never made ANY comment on the fact that girls do willingly post there. She only referred to pimps, and underage girls etc. The thing about escorting that is truly broken or problematic is the law system that arrests the girl, and makes no effort to crack down on the pimps just lets crack down on craigslist. If they really think its pimps, why are the girls arrested? Is that not then trafficking? Then they should go somewhere safe and be given help instead of thrown in jail to get out in ten days to return to such pimp? Closing craigslist escort ads will not do anything to benefit pimped out girls at all. Its going to put them in more dangerous situations. Then those girls will spread out to other venues. But I'd also like to say I know off girls that have plenty of reviews on TER that have pimps so they are NOT just on craigslist....

CL is taking a TON of heat to drop their adult services ads. My opinion is this would only help out hobbyist as the huge majority of ads on CL seem to be scams. I only look at the ads for amusement.

What do you think about this? The front page of The USA Today just reported that in many areas the police will not respond to burglaries or car thefts due to lack of manpower. The victim has to email them a report, and of course many of them don't bother. So it's nice to know LE doesn't pretend to protect private property, but they're worried about the activities of consenting adults who want to hobby or smoke a little pot.

I know this is for questions, not commentary. Do you think the elimination of CL ads would help or hurt hobbyist?

I'll be the first to support identification and prosecution of those who force girls into posting on CL.  But, "in my opinion", that is rarely what appears on CL... The overwhelming majority of postings are just girls who want to make a fast buck, and maybe they involve some guy as a bouncer.  But the news media makes it out like all the posts are about underage girls just because they use words in their postings such as, "young, innocent, youthful"...  Sadly, those who have never seen CL will immediately want them shut down because they believe the media hype....  But then, lets not forget we are entering a "political campaign" season and that always brings the "in my opinion" the liars of the media and the wanna be politicians all acting holier than thow.... Just my Opinion....

Okay, so the do-gooders pressure CL to drop Adult Services. The same ads will appear disguised in personal ads like the sugar babies do.  Also, as wgarrow points out, the CL ads are risky at best and we should play it safe and use only secure systems. I do not think elimination of Adult Services will have any impact.  As for LE, most agencies are very busy busting street level action rather than sophisticated operations (at least in Baltimore and surrounding counties).  LE tends to go after the low-hanging fruit. Not to say that sometimes they don't go after us, but most of the time they are too busy with real crime. Unfortunately, drugs are another issue and LE is hot-to-trot over mj.  Politics, politics. Just leave us alone so we can all have fun and pay taxes.

Happy Hunting!

Agree. I'm sure that public pressure is more focused on the street walkers as they are most visible. Also probably the easiest prosecuted with the highest conviction rates. Our 'pre-arrangements' are not as in-your-face obvious.

I suspect some won't like to hear this opinion but the providers who post/get reviewed/participate on TER and a few other similar sites are a different part of the P4P landscape from those who ONLY show up on CL, BP, etc.

So long as LE has the CL/BP/etc fish to go after they are less likely to dangle a pole in the waters I frequent.  If CL and BP do really stop those ads where will LE look to get their headlines?

If they win that war we all lose and who knows what and who will be the next target. No, it will not help the hobby at all and even though it draws attention our way it keeps LE busy and away from sites like this. If they win that battle then another one will ensue and it's a crap shoot who they will target.

Winning ove CL sets a precedence over any other case they may try to win. Remember the big doggie case from years ago. Had they won that i'm sure review sites would have been a bigger target

90% of the ads on CL are either fraudulent or guaranteed poor service. However, CL is still a very useful tool for identifying those providers that I will not see! Call it the hobbyist DNS list. :)

LE likes easy and low hanging fruit, errr, donuts.

If CL were to go away, what next? The street walkers and CL offer a buffer between LE and the average TER experience. Remove the easier sources of busts and the heat gets turned up on TER.

Why the hell bust people who are not hurting anyone anyways?

While I do not know how old you are, I do know you're old enough to know this is a silly question...

For such an "open" society, we are notoriously close-minded sexually... politics... you name it.

YES they need to get rid of it.

correct. A lot of fake ads on CL - don't like CL anyway.

10 internet sites will spring up overnight to replace the CL erotic section. The US will get a handle on underaged and forced prostitution only when it takes the route that Canada has taken. If some forms of prostution are made more or less legal, the services can be inspected for conformance to laws and regulations. If the present course persists, the problem of underaged and forced prostitution will only worsen, so will other forms of criminal activity that comes with unregulated prostitution.

If state attornies eliminate Craigslist erotic ads, sites will pop up on the internet overnight to provide a forum for the ads. Problems with underaged and forced prostitution will get worse instead of better. So will crimes such as prostitution related robberies and beatings. Even if the AGs succeed in shutting down all US based sites, sites outside the country will provide services that were ended on US sites. The solution is Canadian style regulation which accepts that prostitution has been around since man evolved, but has problems which are best managed by allowing the activity with insight to prevent abuses such as underaged and forced prostitution.

keep quite a few of you gentlemen out of trouble. :)
