perhaps the greatest sport ever invented, the WNBA has no reason for existing IMO, unless you enjoy watching the game played at half speed.

I've tried watching the WNBA, I even watched the Stanford/UConn "game of the century" to see if the women's college game was any better- it wasn't.  In fact, I was really surprised at how incredibly uninteresting it was, even at the so-called elite level of those two teams.

Unless Title 9 gives you wood, the only women's sports worth watching are:

1. Beach volleyball
2. Roller derby
3. Lingerie football (preferably after you've had a few drinks)

So is everyone else as excited as I am about today being the 15th anniversary of the WNBA's first game? Honestly, my WNBA exposure has been limited to ESPN hi-lites.

So far the WNBA has not mirrored the monetary success of the NBA, though it targets profitability. While some teams do make a profit (and others break even), most of the teams in the WNBA lose money each season. Losses are subsidized by the NBA; in 2003, news surfaced that the NBA spent up to $12 million a year to help pay for the WNBA losses. In 2007, teams were estimated to be losing $1.5 million to $2 million a year.[12]

However, in a March 12, 2009 article, NBA commissioner David Stern said that in the bad economy, "the NBA is far less profitable than the WNBA. We're losing a lot of money amongst a large number of teams. We're budgeting the WNBA to break even this year." [13]


There were over 10,000 paid attendance at the LA-NY game tonight. That's a lot of people for one of the "Non big four" sports (mens football, baseball, basketball, and hockey).

and 2/3 of  them even look like real women!

When they start alley-oop dunking and such, I'll watch them. Rather watch paint dry. However, I will admit that I like to watch Diana Taurasi play...because she plays like a guy.

I was never more turned on by a female athlete.  What a doll she was (and still is).

I have no recollection if she won or even who she played, but I still remember every inch of that beautiful body and her glowing tan skin like it was yesterday.

But I don't care if she is a bull dyke, she is a great player...and I can think of 20 other active players that are also. And I prefer that they play the team game instead of Phi Slamma Jamma.

I would be astonished if any WNBA team has ever made a profit as defined by generally accepted accounting principles.

     They don't open the books for these privately owned teams but if "some teams do make a profit" as your Wiki article states (without citation to any authority) I would be willing to bet they are not calculating advertising expenses or some other expense paid by the NBA in the revenue/expenses calculation.

       Check out the USA Today article that Wiki cites as authority. It does NOT SAY  that "some teams do make a profit." That statement is made by the Wiki author without ANY support.

     At some of these major basketball arenas, attendence below 10,000 is not even enough to pay for operation of the facility.
