The Hall-of-Famer and former Padre died early Monday morning from cancer at age 54. He was one of the best hitters of my generation and a real class act. Best wishes and prayers go out to his family.

He was one of the classiest ballplayers to ever come down the pike. Must have kept his illness under the radar although I knew he was sick a couple of years back. I've got an autographed official MLB ball that he signed for me about 10 years ago and I'll certainly treasure it now. RIP Tony!

So I get this text from my son that says TG passed away, and at the end of the text it says "I'm sad".....
I am a Dodger, he was a Padre, but I loved to watch him play and hit.... I respected his game and his life off the field, a true class act......I too, am sad.

I became a Padres', and avid Tony Gwynn, fan while I was stationed in San Diego during my career in the Navy.  Although I left San Diego after two years, I was a Gwynn fan for life.  There has not been a better hitter since Ted Williams, and he will always be Mr. Padre.  

R.I.P. Tony. A true professional. I was reading his stats and one stuck out at me. Against HOF Greg Maddox he had a .437 avg., and never struck out against him in over 400 plate appearances. That is incredible.
