Before the NCAA takes action in the Penn. State matter.
Despite what one misinformed and clueless person here thinks the NCAA will be taking action in the matter. If they do kill the football program, they will need to take the action soon since Penn St. is due to play Ohio at Penn in a little more than six weeks from now, Sept. 1, 2012
If the NCAA does kill the football program, I hope they at least do what sailor66 posted and give those who can/want the chance to transfer to another school without having to sit out a year. So if the NCAA is going to kill it they need to do it soon, real soon.
In 1987, SMU became the only football program to receive the death penalty. The entire season was canceled, in addition to all 1988 home games. SMU went ahead and canceled the road games as well. It took the Mustangs decades to recover to the point of being competitive. The NCAA should seriously consider the long-term effect on the program before making a decision. My position about this hasn't changed from the previous thread.
First, I agree with your position. Now although you can let existing student athletes opt out, or whatever the appropriate term, at the end of the day no more than 15-20 of those football players would get new scholarships. Most, if not all programs, have allocated their allotment for the year. I would hope PSU would still honor the scholarship even if the student athlete elected to stay at PSU. This wasn't their fault.
Also we have to consider the the financial impact PSU football has on the university. Title IX, and all those "other" sports no one watches, benefits significantly from college football.
It is appalling to even hear someone raising the "financial impact" any NCAA actions would have ... It was that very kind of thinking that led to this ...
As the details of this catastrophe unfolded, it became quite clear as to the primary reason Sandusky was able to continue his grotesque actions: the football program was omnipotent at PSU with the head coach of that program (by default) being , by far, the most powerful man in "Creepy" Valley. (If you do not agree, we can only look at the fact that students were recently camping out in front of "JoePa" statue ... the man is dead, and they still feel compelled to rally around him!)
Why are there no suggestions that any NCAA actions (which clearly establish precendent) should strongly consider limiting the dependence that universities have on their "beloved" football programs? Unfortunately, it is the NCAA who has been at the forefront of promoting the football (and basketball) programs, under the quise of benefiting these other "lesser" programs.
This very culture, the cult(ure) of "our beloved major" program, led directly to PSU having a "lack of institutional control". For this reason alone, the university MUST be punished.
