Just saw on SportsCenter where John Smoltz is going to try and qualify for the U.S. Open today in Marietta, GA. I'm not the smartest golf club in the bag, but it would seem that a part-time duffer would have a hard time stepping out of the broadcast booth and qualifying for a major.
To attempt to qualify for the US Open you have to have a handicap of about 2 or less. Which means that Smoltz is consistently shooting in the mid to low 70's. Part time duffer he's not. There are plenty of amateurs who attempt to qualify for the Open and several make it into the field each year. Smoltz prob. has a good a chance as any.
Smoltz has always been an avid golfer (see all those years with the Braves; he, Maddux and Glavine would always play)
It would be great if he made it into the field (only great I suppose for people who watch golf and know who Smoltz is)
