any large downtown hotel or by fisherman's wharf will work because you are still close to the sights and the hotels are large.  Recommend bidding on Priceline or check Hotwire.  Get a four star location, winning bids are $75 plus depending on the season.  check the link for clues.

Providers often also spend a day or two during the week at an SFO/airport hotel to allow access to those of us who don't wish to travel to the city.
