I am planning my travel for July and intend to go a different route for lodging this time around.
I am in need of a full kitchen to accommodate my dietary restrictions to stay on point with my diet/training regimen. I am looking into vacation rentals (VRBO, AIRBNB, HOMEAWAY etc.) and need to narrow down search results from just "San Francisco" My "friend" suggested Russian Hill, Nob Hill or SOMA but I am unsure if that was for selfish personal convenience or for OVERALL convenience for the entirety of my friends. Can some of you locals weigh in on the most convenient residential area for me to make my home away from home during my stay? PM is best please! xxx Madison

I think all those areas are fine for different reasons. Russian Hill and Nob Hill are nice and clean areas. These are mainly residential areas. If you are coming to San Francisco from the South bay/Peninsula or East bay, it can be a little tricky as there is no close freeway access and BART stations are not close by. Russian Hill and Nob Hill are close to the Financial District and also the Marina and Union Street, lots of 20-30 year olds hang out in the Marina and Union Street areas. SOMA in the daytime is ok, it is a newer hipper area so to speak with gentrification issues. You will find a good mix of residences and businesses of all types. Access to SOMA is easy if you are coming from the South Bay/Peninsula and East bay with freeway access (80/101) and BART. The Caltrain station is also nearby. SOMA can be sketchy with homeless people wandering around, but I know of a lot of escorts and FBSM have studios in the SOMA area. Also, there are lots of people out and about going about their business so it is easy to blend in.
to add on to this, soma is a very large area. generally speaking, the area between 9th and 5th is the sketchy section of town. first can be sleepy in the evening because there are a lot of businesses in the daytime.
