Vocaro,
Thanks for the reassurance.  Found that you're right -- some nice providers are willing to see me even without a reference agency or whitelisting.  Wandering around the TER site, it appears that getting a whitelist review is not usual.  Many of the experienced hobbyists who write reviews of SF area providers seem not to have any whitelist listing.  And, the ones that do seem mostly to have gotten those reviews from providers outside our area.

I have my first date set up, and will ask the provider but apparently it's not as essential as I'd imagined.
Great! Let us know how it goes!  Speaking of whitelisting, I had NO IDEA it even existed until a visiting provider who was contacting my references told me I had been whitelisted. Turns out, I had been whitelisted from a lady from the East Coast I had seen a few years back.  Since then, I had two other providers whitelist me but the first provider withdrew her submission for me (for whatever reason) and the other two no longer have TER profiles.  Oh well, it was a great ride while it lasted. :)   lol

Peace...

So, I'm as yet a virgin hobbyist (which might be an oxymoron), looking to avoid bad experiences, in the SF area.  I'd like to know how the LE environment is.  Are there some areas where LE is currently on a client-hunting rampage?  Areas where LE has announced that they really just aren't going to waste their resources as long as there isn't some additional factor (e.g minors)?  Are we allowed to talk about that?

Also, as a TER member, should I expect that I will need to sign up for some other Internet service too?  I'm assuming I will be able to convince a potential provider that I'm not LE.  Then, why wouldn't I just stick with TER listings (until I'm so experienced with the TER listed providers that I've gotten bored, which seems highly unlikely).

Also, I assume I can convince a provider I'm not LE (because she could check on my, not because I'm silver-tongued).  Any local issues with this (as long as I'm reasonably I'm dealing with someone who is LE)?  For instance, if the whole local provider culture has settled on not serving anybody who hasn't been verified by one of those agencies, the I guess I'll have to join one.

Any other advice about our area that would be helpful?  I couldn't find an area-specific noob FAQ -- maybe there is no need for one, but am curious.

Over in the area for general Newbies, someone told me that being whitelisted on TER doesn't substitute for using an independent verification agency.  Is that true in this area?  Could any friendly provider help me understand what's needed?

I've never needed to go through a screening agency. Most providers can verify you from your employer info, or just your home phone number. Some don't verify at all. The provider will let you know what her requirements are. LE is not a problem as long as you are discreet and stick to well-reviewed providers.

My first date went fine.  The provider was gorgeous, and friendly, and more delicious in bed than I could have imagined (and I have a good imagination).  Even the cloak & dagger (go to this place, wait for another message, etc.) was fun.  Thanks to TER and the nice members who helped me figure things out.

I mentioned whitelisting to her, and my provider told me she had never heard of it.  But, she just uses a service to check out the potential clients, so doesn't have to be distracted with security checks.
