This is a question that has been beaten to death over the years on this board, and is probably best addressed elsewhere. Short answer is yes -- the risk of contracting something bad from a bbbj exists, and is increasing (see last week's New Yorker article on the worldwide spread of antibiotic-resistant gonorrhea, which lives very happily in the throat).
