I'm curious of any wonderful restaurants that locals can recommend.  This weekend will be my first time in San Diego, so I want to enjoy some of the BEST your chefs have to offer :)

Thank You

Just kidding.

On a serious note, what kind of food do you like?
Any specifics?
Seafood, steakhouses, Italian, sushi, Mexican, Thai?

Honestly, I love all types of food.  I suppose my favorites are Mediterranean, Thai, and South American.

Special thanks to You :)

910 at the Hotel Colonial on Prospect in La Jolla (910 Prospect to be exact.)

the Sky Room on top of the Valencia Hotel - also on Prospect in La Jolla (hint, if reservations unavailable, they have a small bar that no one knows about, same amazing views.)

Flemmings downtown - best martinis ever.

and of course, Rubios #1 on Mission Bay Drive between Garnet and Grand.

I think that covers it from street tacos to steaks!

If u like Italian, "The Godfather" restaurant on Clairemont Mesa Blvd is outstanding. Make sure u have a reservation though.
In Balboa Park, the "Prada" restaurant is excellent.
Prime Rib and good, reasonably priced steaks "Bully's East" in Mission Valley.
Seafood: "The Fish Market" on the Embarcadero, next to the USS MIdway Museum is right on the water and excellent food.

1. George's in La Jolla.  This place is an icon with very good food.  It has 3 different dining options.

2. Any of the Malarkey restaurants.  In La Jolla you have Herringbone.  Downtown you have Seersucker.  There is another in Del Mar.  The food is inventive and they all have a very fun atmosphere.

3. Urbana Cucina in Banker's Hill.  This has been a San Diego favorite for several years now.

4. Bo-Beau in Point Loma.  The newest in the Cohn chain.  This is one of my new favorites, very intimate and warm and cozy - great for a rainy cold Friday :) The only problem is they don't take reservations.

You can't go wrong with any of these.   Enjoy!

OK, here' a list of my favorites. I'll let you look at links to see what strikes your fancy instead of trying to write reviews.

In La Jolla I love Burger Lounge for casual. http://burgerlounge.com/locations/#la-jolla
Nearby in Del Mar, I love Pamplemousse for French. http://www.pgrille.com/
For Italian, Devanti Enoteca. http://davantidelmar.com/
Pizza, Blue Ribbon Artisan Pizza in Encinitas. http://www.blueribbonpizzeria.com/
For 'California Cuisine', try Solace and the Moonlight Lounge in Encinitas, or JRDN in Pacific Beach. http://www.eatatsolace.com/   and http://www.t23hotel.com/

Those are some of the 'special' places here in SD. Most are farm fresh, locally sourced. None are big chains (Burger Lounge has several locations)...you can get exceptional meals at any of them. Enjoy!

I heard they feel they can make more from it as a 'special occasion' venue than as a 12 table restaurant. I'm bummed...it was good.

Lela, if you don't take my advice (above), John's list here is excellent too.  ;)

There are a wide of variety of styles available here in San Diego.

For example, before you leave, you must have a fish taco.  That's a "San Diego thing to do."

If you're looking for a higher end of meal, Donovan's & any of the Strip Club restaurants are great.

When in the Gaslamp, try out Dick's Last Resort.  It's a very unique experience. :-)

The Tilted Kilt in Mission Valley & by Petco Park (the baseball stadium) are great sports pubs.

There are a ton of good Asian places along Convoy Street.

If you're looking for great Japanese food, then try Iichi-ban in Pacific Beach, Niban in Kearny Mesa/Clairemont, Chopstix on Convoy Street, Chopstix Too off the 163 or either the cafe's in Mitsuwa marketplace.

Hopefully this will help give you a better idea.

Bon appititte! :-)

That bar was the best kept secret in San Diego.  I'll admit though, I don't know how the restaurant penciled. I mean, 12 tables, two seatings a night, that's 24.  My last dinner there for a party of two was over 3 large w wine.  So let's assume 5g a night on a busy night. Doesn't pay - and I guess they figured that out. Oh well, back to the bar at 910

I went with Eddie V's, and then had lunch at Piatti's before heading back to L.A.

BIG THANKS to everyone for making excellent recommendations :)

Hope we all have a great week...
