I just read LillyJune's post; :-( :( Jeez!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! --- LilyJune® (8/6/2004 2:14:58 PM) about a guy with knife and gun and a provider in tears.

QUESTIONS: I was wondering if the providers have an interest in:
1) screening via email using internet protocols (non-user provided info)
2) preserving internet anonymousity
3) personal computer/web site security

I'm leaving out a plug about myself because I'm really just exploring whether there's a percieved concern/need/desire and whether providers that have at least minimal computer skills (I've met a few that don't) would even want to make use of above question items.

When I look at the three questions above, I look at them as being quick & easy (yeah, I'm the pro here), effective and have noticed that several providers are making mistakes with their privacy.

As a provider, what's your take?

Izzy

"yes I do speak Geek"...offer file service

I don't think too many providers take the necessary precautions when it comes to their computer security but they should start. I started logging the activity on my computers at regular intervals several months ago.....lets just say if I haven't written you back it was because I didn't have time to drive to the nearest kinkos or coffeeshop to do it. I'm no expert on internet security but I am much more savvy than your average computer user and a great deal more than your average escort as the geek is strong in me.

This is what what has helped me the most.

-a good strong password that you frequently change. Alphanumeric, upper, lower, 6 digits minimum.

Turn off all unnecessary services running on win-xp. If you don't want to do it the long way go to Black Viper.com and use the registry patch to do it.

Hardware Router, Software Firewall (read up on how to configure them),If you have your own current list of bad i.p.s a quick way to block them easily and protect yourself further is to use Protowall or peerguardian with your firewall. They integrate with most firewalls and have handy tools for lookin up "bad" i.p. addresses.
-Spybot S&D,
-A good Up to date antivirus
-don't use a mailserver program for checking your hoochie mail. I get dozens of virus's sent to me every day and many that have just come out and don't have a fix yet.

Yahoo reveals much much more information to those who do a people search on a D.O.D computer than it does to those who are on civilian comps....the fields don't even have to be filled in with the correct type of info...screen name in the first name field. e-mail address in the screen name field, if you have ever had any account with your real name address and telephone number, even if it is a couple of years old and it can be cross referenced to any of those fields it will show up on a D.O.D computer.

Sam Spade for checking out those confusing e-mail headers and finding out what others can find out on your own website. Trace ip.s look up Domain names, very easy and FREE.

DON'T leave your computer plugged into the lan device even if it is shut off. if you already have a compromise its simple to know when you will be gone and changing a setting to boot your P.C. from the lan device is not hard to do.

Google is your friend, use it. Try the book Google hacks if you want to really learn the in's and outs of how to use their search engine.

Last but not least DO NOT let some guy give you a copy of xp pro and fail to ask him specifically where it came from. Even if you think that they are an intelligent person who would never be stupid enough to download an operating system from a file trading  site and actually use it....or give it to someone they didn't hate.

Probably not, but they're on the same thread for the first time in months.

Progress!

I really don't find your pathology to be interesting enough to inspire or warrant a creative ot original response as a simple default one more than applys to your behavior et al.

Your outbursts have always been TYPICAL to the neurotic anti-social personality type. I anticipated you would make some sort of tourettes like response should I post anything here. Whats it feel like to be so horrbly predictable?

Not giving into those irrational emotionally immature impulses is a GOOD thing.

Did Lily June even post on this thread anyway?

I have never not been on speaking terms with Lily June and I haven't posted here at all in a very long time...primarily because of stupid compulsive people who don't know when they should stop being psychotic, meddlesome,weirdos...

and to Lily June...I have no issue at all with you and regret not introducing myself directly to you prior to our mutual acquaintance doing so.

Ginger,

Frankly I'm impressed that you've got a lot of the basics covered. I'd love to meet a fellow geek! Where's your profile, anyhow?

However, the specific things that I've seen that could be of use to providers is that they could be using email for screening.

And conversely, they're giving too much personal info out simply by using email and personal websites.

Individual computer security is a concern to me as MY contact info is on provider's computers. Should LE arrive, you can guarantee they'll be reading MY email!

Again, my intent was to see if there was an interest. Providers, what's your thoughts on the subject?

Izzy

Of course, it helps to be able to read the headers of the emails that you get, but bad guys can go to internet cafes and send emails from there, so no big deal.

As Ginger noted, understanding your firewall and your spyware/adware as well as the rest of your settings on your antivirus if you're using a computer at home, you should be fine.

None of that takes the place of good screening practices, which Ginger is probably one of the most keen practitioners of.  MANY ladies in town owe their own good practice to her, I am just one of those.

So it really doesn't matter how many times the bad boys send things my way, what does matter is how I respond, or don't respond as the case may be.

My big suggestion is to use dial up and keep that computer turned off unless you're using it.  Run that antivirus software, including the adware/spyware portion at the minimum weekly and probably twice weekly just to make certain you're free from someone stealing your keystrokes.

In the end, if you're merely dating, bringing a gift and accepting one isn't against any law, so unless you're dating a BAD GUY, there's really nothing to worry about...

Which is why I'm going to know EXACTLY who you are before we meet.  (The bad guys don't play by the rules, so I don't date them, no matter how legal what I'm doing is.)

By the way, there's really NO REASON to pay someone for any of this, other than MAYBE to host your domain.  And that should really be a SMALL amount of money.  Also, the original poster is referring to the fact that many emails will point back to your IP address (your computer's address) which could lead back to your name and address if you've not registered your website/ email host carefully.

That's why many of us utilize ziplip and hushmail.

There are plenty of safe ladies that are willing to take a little time out to spend helping you out on computer safety issues.  Don't ever let someone you don't know take charge of these matters!

Last note:  I personally don't believe that review about the gun and the knife, however even if it's true, I think that's an agency by the way the properties of that lady's advertisement shows up on her eros advertisement.  Doubtful that any screening happened at all.

That's why we don't do incall where our computers are.

It's why we use ziplip for our communications and delete delete delete after we meet or if we don't meet, as soon as it's time.

It's why we don't ever ever answer suggestive emails in the first place or write anything suggestive. It's a date!  There's not law against giving a or receiving gifts along the way.

It's why once every so often we have our computer scrubbed clean, and once ever so other often we just take the hard drive out and hammer it to a pulp and give it a salt water bath.

*shrug*

Pretty much anyone should do all of that anyway... you know, if you do banking or any secure exchanges...

It's all secondary to the firewalls and the security.

But I'm kinda paranoid ;P
