I am taking a vacation to your wonderful town next weekend for 4days and am wondering if a car is a needed item.
I am planning to do the touristy type stuff, Sea World, the Zoo, and as much beach time as possible. :)
I am staying at the W.
Any fun things to do that you can recommend would be appreciated also.
Thanks in advance
Scott

The trips from the W to the beach, zoo and Sea World will each cost you about $10-$20 in a cab with tip.  So, if you plan to move about to more than one place a day it would probably make sense to have a car.  If you were staying near Mission Bay and were hitting all of these I would say skip the car and maybe rent a bike but then you have to figure out where it will be safe to park it and lock it.

By the way.  The official temperature today was a scorching 73 degrees.  Probably about 40 degrees cooler than AZ.  A thin blooded Zonie may need a light jacket at night.

San Diego is not like Phoenix where you can drive for a full hour to get from one side of town to another but a 10 mile cab ride can run you $20.

There is bus and trolly service but the trolly doesn't really go down to the beach area.  The closest trolly stop I can think of is about a 2 mile walk to Sea World.

dude, get a car.  You will totally need one.  Cabs suck.

And it was less expensive that renting a car and also fighting the traffic in a town you’re not familiar with. But if you want to take some trips
out of the SD area then you should have a car available. Enjoy that weather I hear they only had 5 days this summer over 80 deg. Hell we haven’t seen 80 since April.

Your biggest problem will be having only four days, there are just too many cool things to do. I would get the car. The W is located in the Gaslamp, correct? That puts you within walking distance of about a hundred bars and restaurants, so that won't be a problem. If you are into baseball, hopefully the Padres are home and you can catch a game at Petco Park, it is a great stadium. Also by the Gaslamp, consider taking the tour of the USS Midway which is docked right there. That is well worth the few hours that it takes and how often do you get to poke around an Aircraft Carrier.

A few things that would require a car:

Del Mar. You said next weekend right (21-22?), the track opens July 18 and is a great way to spend a day.

La Jolla Cove. A great place to hang out and grab a bite by the crashing surf.

Any of the little beach cities in North County like Cardiff, Encinitas, Luecadia and Solana Beach are really fun to explore.

Hope this helps.

Also, not sure if you are going to be here this upcoming weekend but our little "Mardi Gras" on the sand is the next couple of weekends.  It's the OMBAC OTL on Fiesta Island.  This is basically just a big party on the sand with a beach version of a 3 man/woman softball tournament built in as the excuse for the party.  The first Saturday is always the most fun and it is free.  You can bring your own beverages or purchase them on site.
