They'll let you check in with cash, but you'll have to pay the full rate at check in, plus a small deposit for any room charges.

It makes me nervous, but if you check in with your credit card, and then check out and ask to pay with cash (I always carry change so that I can pay the exact amount, and not worry about them scrounging around for change), they will then tear up the credit card slip, and it never appears on your card.  That way. . .no deposit, no extra charge, no full rack rate.

Don't let your friend stay and use the room after you are done.  This could put you in some trouble.

If hotel runs your credit card when you check-in, then even if you pay cash when checking out there will be a transaction record on your credit card even if no charge appears on your bill.

Just depends how cautious you are about leaving a paper trail.

While there may be a record in a computer somewhere, there has never been a charge appear on my bill.  Of course, I'd never allow my guest to stay after me. . .
