San Diego

I'm seeing a trend here

Not everyone will find this amusing, but if you are into cars. It may give you a juggle.
As we all know San Diego is not LA. But we're developing our fair share of traffic, esp. along the 5 fwy.

So, I'm sitting in traffic and almost have one of those fender bender moments. It was a fully restored "66 Mustang. Clean as can be! Original paint color, chromed out. Lucky enough to still have the great old black and yellow CA lic. plate.
Luckily, I stopped in time and was relieved. In the next lane over was a brand new Benz. I had to giggle at myself. I felt I must be some kind of Tom Boy or car geek. Because as I sat there in traffic. I thought to myself.
I would have felt 1000 times worse had I hit the restored Mustang, then if I had hit the Benz.

I had to giggle.. because I'm thinking more people would be worried about the pricy Benz.

How about you???

Kisses,
J.Loren

Nobody will miss the benz.  Now the mustang is a piece of American history.  I had a '67 mustang fully restored.  It was a beautiful car.  I never drove it in traffic because of what you just told us about!

I would have absolutely felt worse about hitting the Mustang. The Benz, while expensive, isn't all the unique. The Mustang is a piece of classic American culture. Besides, these days, the Mustang is probably worth a lot more than the Benz!

And, yes, Jai, I'm also a car geek, as well as several other types of geek, as you well know LOL!!

You can get a new Benz anywhere, the Mustang is irreplaceable.

I have a 55 chevy and a nitro fueled 64 Ford F100 and god pity the person that would even put a scratch on either one.

But on the other hand the if one of the cars of today hit one of my tanks they better have air bags for sure as the old classics are ALL AMERICAN STEEL and no plastic.

On the other hand. Guys face it if Jai hit your car, classic or not it was an accident right. All would be forgiven.

LOL to ya  Jai

Firstly, I'd agree, although either would be a shame to ding up.

I'm looking for suggestions for a new (or newish) car.  I'm not in SD, so convertibles don't work for me anymore.  Prefer something that tops out in the low to mid $40k range.  American cars do not qualify, and it needs to be fun to drive.

Thanks in advance.

No I hear you - there's something about the time and care put into maintaining a classic car that would kill me if I ever hit one!  A current Mercedes would be an easy fix...although one of my favorite classic cars is the Mercedes Roadster - white paint and red leather interior....very 50's starlet!

To me, it seems a bit hard to find something unique now n' days. So many body styles are similar.
On the partical side: I am really impressed by the Camry Hybrid.

These two are a little over 40K, but two of my standard favorites. I don't care what the side crash test said about the BMW. ;) BMW's are always fun to drive. The suspension is awesome!

In the price range, it would be difficult to get a better car than  BMW 3-series.  A 328 will have plenty of scoot and great handling.  If you are willing to push the upper end of your price range, a 335 will be nearly as fast as a the last generation M3 with lots more comfort.

& fun to drive - I translate that as smaller.  How many seats, how old are you willing to go?

I think I'd have to go with the consensus, a BMW 3 series.

OTOH, there's also the mini-cooper, another approach to fun.  You didn't say how fast you wanted it.

Hey Mooser - your truck sounds HOT!

I have a 1980 F-100 - custom built after the line was closed in 1979.  I think it may be the last F-100 made but have not been able to verify it.

It's too heavy to do much to the engine, but it's in near perfect condition.  3-speed on the column,  I never worry about it getting stolen, nobody under 30 can figure out how to shift it.  :-)

I remember around 1990 someone in a rice rocket rear ended me.  It TOTALED their car.  It had to be flat bedded off.

All it did to my truck was smash the tire carrier under the bed, and bent the corner of my bumper.

It was almost comical, if I'd had some silver spray paint I could have just tossed the tire into the bed and touched the bumper up and told them not to worry...

Giggle,
TS Jamie :-)

I was TRYING to get away from my 2 BMW garage, but I guess that's not gonna work out.

I'm selling a 530, and regarding the "fast" comment below, I guess Mr. Clinton might ask how you define fast.  Rumor has it that it was recently seen on a back road in the 115 mph range, but there are no witnesses, so it's just a rumor.

Thanks to everyone for the input.

I may get accused of a mid-life crisis, but that means I'd have to live to 96.  I can't imagine driving this car, and living that long, LOL.
