If you're going with your ATF to the opera, the answer to your question has to be Puccini's "Madama Butterfly" without a doubt IMHO. Classic story with fantastic music. (Bring plenty of tissues for your lady!). Problem is: it played at SD Opera last season, so won't be back in town for a while.

It's an excellent modern Broadway musical that loosely adapts the "Madama Butterfly" story line to the Vietnam War era; but it is not an opera.

great things about Madame Butterfly. I heard it's a good "first opera" for someone who's never been like me so I hope it comes to my city soon!
Besides, butterflies are my favorite! lol So I love the title.
I love love love opera!!
Madame Butterfly is the one that I would want to see
I Vespri Siciliani by Giuseppe Verdi
Ah, the creative hedonism and tragedy of twisted love(s) set amidst the glitter and grit of Paris cafe society. What more could you want? What OP would argue that this opera doesn't parallel their life in some form or another?
My personal favorite, off topic, is Norma. No one does it like Callas!
ATFs, please take me to the opera. I love dressing up and sitting in a box. I'm tired of taking myself
