I've talked with several US based stars who were harassed by US Customs upon return from overseas junkets about whether they were carrying sums of cash (BTW, this isn't news to the authorities for anyone thinking I'm revealing something I shouldn't be... they know who's who and who's where and have a preconceived notion as to why). The same would apply for someone from overseas leaving the US. It's hard to move the money. It can't be transferred through a bank without drawing attention to itself, and it can't be transferred across the border as cash (over $10,000)... so it becomes a 'what's a girl to do' type situation

Whatever amount of currency including cash and items that are worth of certain value are legal. You need to declare wen the value exceeds 10,000 USD. OMG my grammar.....
