I've come across a few news stories here and there that have freaked me out a little. It seems that thousands of birds have been falling out of the sky and dying.
Thinking perhaps I had this whole atheist thing wrong and we are witnessing a coming apocolypse, with massive bird die offs from Mississippi to California, I was surprised to find this little piece.
It seems that at least one of these die offs was purposely caused by none other than the USDA. Why did the USDA intensionally poison thousands of birds in South Dakota?
From the article:
"Now, the USDA says it set out poisoned bait for the birds after a local farmer complained that they were defecating in his animal feed."
I'm sure local farmers can get the USDA to do their beck and call. All they need to do is give them a ring. Perhaps, the story should have read: "large agribusiness bribes government to kill a shit load of birds because they're too cheap and lazy to buy a tarp."
But, it's only birds, right? Who gives a fuck? It's not like we eat birds or eggs, and those poisons have no chance of poisoning ourselves.
Of course, bird die offs aren't the only problem. Some 10,000 cattle just kicked the bucket in Vietnam.
Of course, Vietnam says the deaths are a result of an especially cold winter, and assuming that's true, I guess that would mean it's proof that global warming is bullshit.
Which leads me to another question. Why is it that we can't ever make this shit work in our favor? Here's what I mean: In that back-asswards land known as Europe, they have actually managed to turn animal waste into energy. The stuff is actually recycled. And yet, I came across this rather curious piece on the internets from early last year. (link below)
I gotta ask, at what point does the pursuit of a dollar become fatal? Do the cretins in big agribusiness and the USDA not realize that we all live in one giant bio-dome, and that mismanagement of it will eventually lead to the proverbial gun being pointed at their heads too?
and a dollar short. The government has been killing massive amounts of birds for several decades. e.g., at Ft Campbell, KY, 30 or so years ago, the post was being overrun by starlings. Tens of millions of starlings. The sky turned black when they all joined in flight. Bird droppings were everywhere, and the noise was unbearable. The Army got approval to spray a soapy liquid that would eliminate the natural oils on the birds feathers that they had for protection from the elements. Worked fairly well, as a few million died during this process. Next big problem was scooping the dead starlings up and disposing of them. A couple million dead starlings make a pretty good sized pile.
