It looked like Clinesmith was going to plead guilty, but then his lawyers issued public statements that "It was never his intent to mislead the court." However the law he would be pleading to, "knowingly and willfully — (3) makes or uses any false writing" would be inconsistent with "never his intent." . It's unlikely a judge will accept a guilty plea of willful intent in which the defendant also publicly claims no such intent. . The lawyers may have scuppered Fridays proceedings by trying to have it both ways. The plea deal may be taken off the table by the Feds.
Clinesmith didn’t admit to *intent* to altering a document. He admitted to doing it, ie adding 3 words to an email. He told the judge (as reported by Fox News):
“At the time I thought the information I was providing was accurate, but I am agreeing the information I inserted was not originally there, and I inserted the information."
So you’re also wrong about spying on the Trump campaign. Clinesmith said he believes his change was accurate at the time he made it. He admits changing the email was wrong. That’s all.
Yup. A HUUUUUGE crime, huh? Earlier posts did a good job listing all the charges and convictions of Trump’s close associates. Adding 3 words to an email pales in comparison.
He admitted he changed the email. Period. End of story.
But not nearly as big a deal as lying before Congress, which is what the bipartisan SIC referred Trump Jr., Kushner, and others to the Justice Department for doing. Yet no action taken yet. Gotta wonder why. Oh yeah... Barr.
