to go to trial, their attorney will insist that they take the fifth on everything. That way, all avenues for Defense remain open. These people are only witnesses and have not been charged with anything, but COULD be charged if they admit they did anything illegal, so it's much more incriminating and significant when mere witnesses start taking the 5th when they are not yet the target of the investigation. It's more of an admission of potential guilt.
