Reid is a longtime Nevada politician; at one point he was the Gaming Commissioner. As such, he had probably more power than any other elected official in the state, except on paper.
He's also a Mormon. In Nevada, that will get you elected to anything. Ask the governor, who is also a member of the same "church". Take a look at how well Romney did in the Nevada primary. They stick together as well as or better than most any organized group.
