the authorities in israel had actually banned the protest, but the israeli supreme court ordered it to be permitted.
but then, as your heading cites, nevertheless, the fundamentalists got their way, because once the parade got underway, 3 people were stabbed, and then the parade was called off as it was supposed to be going on.....

why not jerusalem? the zionists once endeavored to be 'a light unto the nations....' - at least in a small respect the theocratic state of israel is slightly more enlightened than the rest of the neighborhood.

see you in cairo or islamabad for the next parade.....

This topic should flare up some real passions.....

Here is my question??  Why did they have to pick Jerusalem for this parade??  I don't condone the stabbing, however, why pick a city that is holy to over half the worlds population??
Personally, I may be in the far, far, extreme on this issue but I am not even in favor of civil unions for gays.  Infact, not even domestic partner recognition!!

I don't much give a shit either way.  I don't think gay marriage is going to destroy the fabric of society.  If they want it they can have it as far as I'm concerned.  I'm not quite sure why gays as a group want to sign up for the myriad of divorce and alimony laws, but I'm a lawyer so the more the merrier.

Except for domestic partner health insurance, which many big employers are offering anyway, everything I can think of as a benefit of marriage can be accomplished by contract or power of attorney.  All except for the approval of mommy and daddy in the form of the state, that is.

The fact of the matter is that under the progressive Israeli/Jewish government, this parade has been allowed to take place, just as it has been allowed to take place in many countries around the world. I can guaran-damn-tee you it would never even be considered under even the most "enlightened" Arabic, or "Palestinian" leadership.
Much as it is in America with the objections to the Gay and Lesbian communities being primarily due to the boisterousness and arrogance of the Christian fundamentalist community, so too is the objection to alternative lifestyles being voiced by the fundamentalist Jewish communities in Israel.
Monotheistic Religious Fundamentalism is by its very nature an intolerant perspective, be it Muslim, Christian, or even Jewish.
Fortunately, in Israel at least, the extreme fundamentalists are still very much in the minority. Why Jerusalem? for the exact same reason a group in the United States wishing to make a statement would choose to march in Washington DC. Jerusalem is the capital of the State of Israel. And in fact, the Gay community is more accepted in mainstream secular Israeli society than their counterparts in the USA at this time.
EV, you and I are very much on opposite sides of the fence on this issue, but I respect your ability to dialog in a civil manner. So let me ask you please, why you have such strenuous objections to the "gay" issue?

I don't understand your opposition to domestic partner recognition.  I think I remember you saying long ago that it would take us toward unpredictable moral ambiguity, but I may remember incorrectly.  I just don't get how people who don't choose their sexual orientation, but discover it (against considerable social stigma) should not be allow the legal and economic privilidges and responsibilities as I enjoy with my wife.

What's wrong with this picture?

The Israelis must be asleep at the wheel.

No attempt to attribute this act to Palestinian/Arab/Moslem fundamentalist/Islamofascist/anti-western terrorists!
