Let's talk about Islam...

A brief Google search through AI says

Islam arose in the early 7th century CE in the Arabian Peninsula, primarily through the life and teachings of the Prophet Muhammad.

1. Pre-Islamic Arabia (The "Jahiliyyah" or Age of Ignorance):

Diverse Religious Landscape: Before Islam, the Arabian Peninsula was a mix of religious practices. The dominant belief system was polytheism, with various deities and spirits worshipped, often associated with specific tribes. The Kaaba in Mecca was a central shrine housing numerous idols.

Abrahamic Influences: There were also significant Jewish and Christian communities in various parts of Arabia, particularly in the north and south. These communities introduced monotheistic ideas and biblical narratives.
Tribal Society: Arabian society was largely tribal, characterized by strong kinship ties, a code of honor (murūwah), and frequent inter-tribal feuds.
Mecca as a Trading Hub: Mecca was an important commercial center due to its location on trade routes. The Kaaba also made it a significant pilgrimage destination, bringing economic benefits.

The Life of Prophet Muhammad:

Birth and Early Life: Muhammad was born in Mecca around 570 CE into the Quraysh tribe, a prominent Meccan clan. He was orphaned at a young age and raised by his grandfather and then his uncle, Abu Talib. He worked as a merchant and earned a reputation for honesty and trustworthiness, earning the nickname "Al-Amin" (the Trustworthy).

First Revelations (610 CE): Around the age of 40, while meditating in a cave on Mount Hira near Mecca, Muhammad began to receive what Muslims believe to be divine revelations through the Angel Gabriel. These revelations, which continued throughout his life, form the basis of the Qur'an.

Core Message: The initial revelations emphasized strict monotheism (the worship of one God, Allah), the impending Day of Judgment, and social justice, including caring for the poor and needy. This challenged the polytheistic practices and social inequalities prevalent in Mecca.
Early Followers and Persecution: Muhammad's message initially attracted a small group of followers, including his wife Khadijah and close friend Abu Bakr. However, his condemnation of idolatry and polytheism angered the powerful Meccan tribal leaders, who feared it would disrupt their economic interests tied to the Kaaba's idol worship. Muhammad and his followers faced increasing persecution.

The Hijra (Migration to Medina, 622 CE): Due to severe persecution, Muhammad and his followers migrated from Mecca to Yathrib (later renamed Medina) in 622 CE. This event, known as the Hijra, marks the beginning of the Islamic calendar. In Medina, Muhammad was invited to mediate disputes among warring tribes and successfully established the first Muslim community-state.

Building the Community: In Medina, Muhammad continued to receive revelations, which increasingly focused on social legislation and the organization of the community. He united the various tribes under the Constitution of Medina.

Return to Mecca (630 CE): After several years of conflict and skirmishes with Mecca, Muhammad and his growing community eventually returned and peacefully conquered Mecca. He cleansed the Kaaba of idols, rededicating it to the worship of one God.

Death of Muhammad (632 CE): By the time of his death, Muhammad had unified most of the Arabian Peninsula under the banner of Islam.

Sooooo the bottom line here is that "Muhammad began to receive what Muslims believe to be divine revelations through the Angel Gabriel. These revelations, which continued throughout his life, form the basis of the Qur'an."

Why would anyone believe this? I'm genuinely asking here, The entire faith is based on the word of one man. Why believe this?

I’m genuinely asking here.  The entire faith is based on the word of one man - a Jew named Yeshua.  Why believe this?

That’s another religion for another discussion.

Why did the followers of the prophet Muhammad believe him?

Judaism is based on Moses coming down off a mountaintop in Sinai with the Ten Commandments.
Why did the Jews believe him?
Buddhism is based on the teaching of one man named Buddha.
Why do Buddhist believe him?
BPS has already schooled you on Christianity.
In more recent years, Joseph Smith went into the woods in upstate New York and came out claiming to have seen golden plates with the history of ancient American civilizations on them. When asked by people to show them the plates he said he was not permitted to do that and they just had to believe him. So they DID!
WHY????
And then there's L. Ron Hubbard a sci-fi writer who concocted a completely ridiculous tale about alien souls dumped into volcanos.
But lots of people believe him.
So here's a question for Loser: name me ONE religion that's NOT based on the word of just one man.
We don't have to know the answer to know you're an idiot.
And probably an anti-Islamic one.

The core tenets of Christianity are found in the four Gospels of Matthew, Mark, Luke and John. Jesus didn’t tell people to believe his miracles without seeing them, those authors either witnessed them or spoke to witnesses (John) of Jesus Christ’s life.

I read a book on the history of Islam. Basic premise of the book is that Mohammed had traveled throughout the Middle East and was exposed to Christian and Jewish faith and theology. He then took parts of what he had learned and created a religion to pull the tribes of Arabia away from the worship of multiple deities.

It’s a fair bit deeper than that but the idea of driving out other religions with the idea of replacing them with a monotheistic religion is one of the big heavy tenants of it.

Now what I’m trying to get at is why it took off like it did?

There’s crack pot religions started all the time that fizzle out into bad cults and the like but not Islam.

as Islamic tribes' influence spread through conquest of non-muslim tribes, conquered peoples were given the simple choice of "Convert or Die."  This attitude persists to this day, i.e., that there is no room for any other religion.
